TLDR Great customer service, high prices, lowering food quality. Note: We are a different review channel than another similarly named review channel in the same comment section. Small world!
Recently, we ate food from Gov’s in Old Town. We’ve been coming here all my life, and it’s been one of our favorite go-to places in the past, so I figured I would review it. Lately, and I mean for the last handful of years, I’ve been more and more disappointed by the establishment. First and foremost, it should be noted that Gov’s always has excellent staff. They always bend over backwards for their customers, and I commend them on some of the best customer service in the area. They also have fantastic deals on certain food items, especially during their birthday specials. However, the food has decreased in quality, and the prices have increased due to the economy, which makes me reluctant to go.
Within the last year or two, there’s a 50-50 chance that something will be incorrect with our order when we eat from there, especially with the takeout orders. Despite specifically noting when ordering, issues range from Gov’s forgetting to put condiments in the takeout bag, forgetting utensils, to leaving out items we asked for on the side (lettuce, pickles, etc.), and serving pink burgers when we ordered well done. The medium-rare burger occurred a few nights ago during their $6 burger special, but it has occurred numerous times within our history of eating there. Fantastic deal, but a simple burger was incorrect. He ate half of it because he was hungry, and it wasn’t worth the hassle of driving back for a new one.
The breakfast buffet is worthwhile, and the bakery items are some of the most consistently good items in the place (though, the rice krispie treats have lacked marshmallow and went towards corn syrup). The prices are high, however, which isn’t necessarily their fault. The cake slices are great, but I can’t justify spending more than 8 dollars on one, except on rare occasions. Whatever is consistently good is expensive, and whatever is a deal is a gamble in quality or experience. Unfortunately, I’m getting more reluctant to go. While the customer service is great, we go for the food. While Gov’s food is better, the golden arches a few doors down is more consistent (albeit lower quality), and I don’t have an obligation to tip there.
Overall, Gov’s is one of the better local food establishments, and one of the few that have a true sit-down experience. The homestyle food is good when they get an order right, and you can’t go wrong with the bakery items. However, the prices are on the rise, you have to be willing to eat whatever they give you for a good time, and you need to check your takeout order before going out the door. We aren’t mad, just disappointed. We seek improvements, so we can go here more.

Read moreThe absolute worst place in the area to rent out a room for an event. I went to a baby shower here yesterday for my aunt. They were told it would be $50 an hour with the party starting at 12pm to set up but no clarification on an end time or that we’d be kicked out. 3:15pm, the place was dead and an extremely rude guy comes in and starts opening all of the doors and blinds while they were still opening presents and says “we need to start opening this room for customers” We all rushed quickly to clean up and while we were cleaning up and taking things to their car, the same guy who started opening all of the doors told us not to keep the door to the outside open because we were “freezing their customers” we heard that atleast 3 times. What are we? Paying more than any of those customers to use your room but we’re the ones treated poorly? A girl comes in through a different entrance and says something like “can you hurry up? The customers are cold” we all said “you can shut that door then” We’re just trying to clean up after getting kicked out. Oh, I was not impressed. Then, the icing on the cake, they tried OVERCHARGING my aunt. I can’t even believe they made her pay after pulling this stunt. Needless to say, their extreme rudeness cost them a lot more money because we could’ve been there for atleast...
Read moreHonestly, I am a server myself, and this was unacceptable. We had Kari. Everything started out fine, but she didn’t come to check on us ONCE, and it wasn’t even busy! She never offered to refill our drinks, and I found chicken in my fried pickles (I get that’s an error on the kitchen’s end, but the least she could do is check the plate for foreign food/items; that’s what you’re supposed to do before serving ANY FOOD TO ANY CUSTOMER.) Additionally, the way the food was plated was sloppy. I had to go ask for our bill because it was honestly unbearable to be there.
Like I said, I am a server myself. I have exclusively worked in restaurants since I was 15. How we were treated and served today was unacceptable. I’m going to reiterate this because it’s so important despite a grown woman not being able to do it and understand it herself: It’s standard to check in with your tables and see if they’d like a refill and see how your customers are doing and whether they like their food or not. It’s standard to check the plates before serving to ensure there are no foreign items or potential allergens (we were lucky) or anything dangerous/unsanitary. Not once were we checked on. We were given our food and drinks and that was...
