After reading the reviews of how great this place is, I was so excited to drive from Fayetteville to here to try this out. Wow what a waste of my time and money! We arrived around 5:30 on Friday night and it wasn't extremely busy. We were seated right away and our waitress came over to get our drink order. Her voice was barely a whisper. She went to get our drinks and we told her we needed just a few extra minutes. She came back and got our orders. Up to that point she was good, not outstanding, but decent. Then a large party arrived along with two other smaller tables. However, our waitress didn't work the larger table. There appeared another waitress. We get our food after a bit of a delay. First, I ordered from the menu creamed potatoes. What I got was mashed which was fine, but not what I know as cream potatoes. I asked the waitress just to be sure there was no mistake and she stumbled and said I don't know why they call them cream potatoes because they are mashed. Well ok then. I had steak, husband had meatloaf which was a smaller portion than we thought it would be, and my kid had a child chicken dinner. When she brought our food we needed refills and thought she would bring those, nope. Started eating, waitress disappeared so no drink refills and no questions about how the food was. The large time behind us we saw our waitress appearing there, refilling drinks, and blatantly ignoring us. Finally I got up and went and got the pitcher of tea to refill my glass which the other waitress saw. We saw her head to the kitchen and thought oh she went to tell her to check on us, nope. So we waited and no check, nothing. By this time we've been there for over an hour. We've already observed said waitress going to other tables and blatantly ignoring us. Finally she brings our check and slaps it on our table and quickly runs off. Not one word if we were ok, needed anything, wanted dessert, a to go box (I still had half of my steak which I wanted to take home), nothing. So yep I was beyond mad. Went to the front to pay and flat out told the check out girl how bad it was. Apparently she thought that was funny. No apologies nothing about getting the manager. Then some guy appears who was busy on his phone, barely apologizes. Wow, it takes a lot for me to complain and say I would never come back, but this just crossed that line. There was never an apology, never an offer of a discount, or anything. I have sent a message on Facebook and all I got from that was sorry to lose your business, we will try to prevent this from happening. I just wasted $35 for service where I could have gone to McDonalds and been treated better. We drive to places like Florence and easily spend over $50 including tip several times a month. Apparently we aren't the right people for this place. Utter disappointment and I definitely won't recommend this place to anyone based upon the poor customer service. Too bad I can't give less...
Read moreWe had a large party post-church on a Sunday and got seated almost immediately. There's a lot more seating than you'd think here! Decor and atmosphere reflect the name well... Very comfy and inviting. The menu stays small and rotates--6 entrees and 8 sides. Kids menu had 3 options also. Honestly, it was nice to not have 100 options! This is down home cookin.... Don't come for a salad or health options! The veggie portions were good sizes. Some entrees, like the hamburger steak and pork loin were good size, but the chicken and dressing was just 1-2oz of shredded chicken on top of dressing. It was delicious, but I expected a chi ken breast or much larger portion of chicken for $13. The adult chicken tender meal only came with 2 tenders (granted it was so well fried and fell apart!), and my son's chicken nuggets meal (also hand fried!) had almost the same amount of chicken for half the cost. The adult entrees were a tad more expensive than I expected for a restaurant like this, but everything tasted fabulous and the service was great! My kids are veggies and tried new things, so it was a win!! We got peanut butter pie to go... YALL! Best I've ever had!!! And not expensive! Well definitely be back to try new menu items and the breakfast one Saturday! Great experience overall! It was a crowd pleaser for my party of 8, ages 4-87! Update: Second time we've gone with a large party, this time 12+ a baby. They had a difficult time seeding us because they won't allow tables to be pushed together. I think they could honestly cut down one or two tables in that dining space and actually have people be able to move around or have large parties. It gets very overwhelmingly crowded in the larger dining area when it's full. The food is still good, but I expect a lot more seasoning for a place called grandmother's house. I expect well-seasoned veggies and super seasoned and delicious entrees but I feel like the food is actually kind of becoming bland and not worth the price that they're charging. It's well cooked, but even with adding salt and pepper to stuff, it's just not what I would think of down home cooking. We also struggled to get our server to help us out this time once we got our food finally. I know they were packed, but she basically disappeared even though we needed things. That got a little frustrating. So if we have that larger party again, we probably won't come here. I would probably only come here with...
Read moreThis restaurant has been on my radar for a while. I was traveling home from another city and it was on the way so I stopped for a visit. It is located in an old family home in a rural area. If it wasn't for a prominent sign and a good sized parking lot I would have driven past it. The interior is quite charming with wood floors and period decor from the middle of the last century. The menu which changes daily features meat and three options that was once prevalent in this area. I chose pork tenderloin with a honey cranberry reduction which was the perfect compliment for the meat. Veggies were turnip greens, lima beans, and creamed corn which were appropriately seasoned. Cornbread and iced tea hit the spot too. I finished with a piece of caramel coconut pie which I took home for later. This place definitey has old-time southern cuisine so if you want to enjoy a meal from yester-year in a country setting then add this spot to you bucket list.
Up to this point I've described the food and the feel of this place. Now about the wait staff. I had the most charming server ever. An attractive lady named Diana (think Princess Diana) who absolutely captivated me with her explanation of the daily menus, the history of the restaurant and the original recipes created by the chef/owner who was actually born in the house and who dropped by to chat with me too.
When you go for a visit be prepared to stay for awhile. Take time to converse with the staff and the other customers. If you do you'll be transported back in time that is much different from today's hustle and hurry up society. And be prepared to hear, "Y'all come back for...
