Tierra Sur is a top-notch, all Kosher restaurant (non-dairy) located in the Herzog Wine Winery in Oxnard, CA. Thereās just about nothing else like it in the area and one can see why it would also be a destination for those in Los Angeles seeking a fine dining and also certified Kosher experience.
They do have some vegetarian options, though glancing through the menu with that as my focus, it clearly wasnāt their main intention, and the menu does change seasonally ā so some of what I had in July is not currently available at this December writing.
Of course, since youāre at a winery, you might as well start with wine. Our table shared the Camouflage Red Blend. This was one of the most satisfying glasses of wine I have ever had. Iām certainly not a wine expert, but Iāve had enough to at least know whether or not I like itā¦I liked this a lot. Iām rarely moved to buy wine as the result of having it at a restaurant. In this rare occasion, the Herzog Camouflage Red has entered my permanent list of ābuy this wine.ā
For my main, I had the Veggie Pizzetta. (a version with veal is whatās available on the menu as of this writing.) For a non-dairy pizza this wasnāt bad. Points for effortā¦but as firm believer in the power of cheese, this was not my favorite dish in the world.
I also had a side of their āPotato Fries.ā Iām also a firm believer in the potential of french fries, and there was something about them putting the word āpotatoā right in the name that inspired me to order them. These were super super good. Perfectly cooked, perfectly thick, perfectly tasty fries that I didnāt want to share with anyone (err, though I did.)
A couple of odd choices for my meal, but this was brunch time and I tend to eat lighter earlier in the day, especially with the absence of brunch foods on the menu. Thy also offer house-made pastas, a pumpkin fritter is currently on the menu, sweet potato fries, and a Squash-Apple Soup round out the vegetalrian options I can see currently available.
So if I had to do it again (and I would), Iād come back for dinner and have the more hearty pasta dish and more tapas. All in all this was a VERY nice restaurant with impeccable service and the extra bonus of being able to walk up the stars and view the wine cellars was...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOnce again I went to the restaurant at the Herzog winery. I really tried to like it, itās supposed to be one of the most gourmet and upscale kosher eateries in the nation, certainly in California I live nearby less than an hour. And have had the occasion to go there periodically
My experiences have not been satisfactory so I wanted again to prove myself wrong and was looking forward to that
This time it was a family member who made an event inviting the entire family. We were given a choice of ribeye steak, chicken or fish In addition there was a salad and dessert And there was a selection. Of red and white wines
Iām sure the sponsor paid a lot of money per person for this party
My wife and i chose the steak and my sister who sat next to me chiae the chicken Both mine and my wifeās steak were barely edible certainly not tasty at all. Had I been the one paying I wouldāve returned it immediately but I didnāt want to embarrass the host Iām addition the steak came with only the following on the side a tablespoon of spinach. My sister didnāt finish her chicken So I asked her for a piece and it was edible but bland and thatās it. it was better than the steak butā¦..
Dessert was a choice of Churros or flourless chocolate cake. I chose the churros and they arrived too overdone and almost burnt
Sorry to say the eating experience was dismal and once again I walked away shaking my head as to why people rave about this place. I avoid it.
The portions are not generous. The prices high. . The food tastes bland at best and it simply doesnāt measure up to any level of what I would call a good restaurant The wine however was good but I didnāt come...
