Myself, 16m old & husband all ended up here on Sunday. Atmosphere was old school (which we loved). Service was alright. My husband was looking at the menu as she was explaining to me what sides they offered and as a typical man he wasn't paying attention so he asked about daily vegetables & I could hear the irritation in her voice having to repeat the veggies. She also told the kitchen I said no gravy on mashed potatoes AFTER we already ordered - which was not true. After my husband ordered his food - I stated to hold gravy on mashed potatoes because I figured there would be plenty on the hamburger steak. But she lied to the kitchen because she was told during ordering. She brought the food and asked if we were alright after nearly finishing and from behind the bar. I had to ask her for a refill on husbands drink (he wasnt at the table) & (as a former server, it is important to check back mid meal, im my opinion)
Which by the way, the food tasted like what I could buy at Sam's and make including the cheese sticks (I'm pretty sure we buy the exact ones for at home). The ranch and brown gravy was good but food wise we weren't impressed. He got the country fried steak which tasted frozen and dropped into a fryer. My hamburger steak I know was frozen because she didn't ask what temperature I wanted my meat cooked. Lima beans out of a can for sure. Black eyed peas were seasoned alright but tasted the same as they do out of the can. We understand there isn't many diners like this around anymore and can understand how locals could appreciate that aspect, but definitely could be upscaled just a notch. The lunch was 12.99 for both meals + add ons and to be honest the hamburger steak wasn't worth $14 (after tax) and his definitely wasn't. The sweet tea was really good, the ranch & brown gravy was good. Our son was happy though so we were too! We won't be back, but hope the locals keep it around :) All together our bill was $44 which we weren't happy with due to quality of food, but we paid and went on our merry way!
We met an older man named Jake who does free golf cart rides with a nice orange well taken care of golf cart! Could definitely tell he's a regular there and he gave us a card. If my 16 month old wasn't with us we would have taken that free ride to check out the areas he knows (he seemed like he'd be a great tour guide)
Just an honest opinion from a Gulfport local!
The reviews on here definitely made it seem like a really good hole in the wall but we weren't super duper impressed but hope the best especially if it's locally owned (not sure if it is but...
Read moreI was with a group of 4. We arrived a little after 6 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Apparently, the local VFW Chapter meets here for dinner on the 2nd Tuesday (thankful they served). The parking lot was full, and so was the moderate size dining room. The staff was in a controlled frenzy trying to catch up. It took about 15 minutes for the dinner rush to clear enough for us to grab a table. (I worked in food service during college. It's a real bummer getting slammed and trying to catch up, so grace was given for the slower than expected service). The dining room was clean and maintained, with maybe 10 tables scattered around. The inside was the familiar small town (rural) look and feel with a pool table in case you're so inclined.
Our table was cleaned, and setups brought over. We ordered and patiently waited. It took 15 to 20 minutes for the food. It seems quite a few locals call in and pick up their food, which i'm sure added to the frenzy. I ordered the fish dinner. It's 5 or 6 catfish fillets on top of a generous amount of French fries. The catfish were well cooked and delicious. The staff got back to what I would think is a more normal pace and did very well. We were checked on regularly by the very friendly staff. I recommend this diner, except maybe call in your order if it's dinner time and the...
Read moreNice little hideaway in Pass Christian Mississippi on the gulf. Very friendly staff, quick service. Very extensive menu of local seafood, comfort food, sandwiches or breakfast. Good beverage selection, with beer available by bottle or can. Hubby ordered shrimp platter, with hush puppies, fries and coleslaw. Shrimp was a bit overcooked and on the small side. Local honey mustard sauce was amazing. I ordered red beans and rice, with cornbread and a grilled pork. Beans and rice were served in huge bowl, enough for family of four. Although the beans were cooked properly, it was overseasoned with pepper. Could have added some other seasonings to make it a bit spicier. Pork chop was nicely grilled, just very thin. Cornbread was delicious, sweet and moist. With so many choices on the menu, maybe they should focus on doing a few things well and reduce...
