As a self-proclaimed foodie I have been struggling to find mom & pop restaurants that check all of the boxes since moving to the West Valley. Well tonight I discovered the Wild Horse West restaurant located in Peoria near Lake Pleasant. If you blink you will miss this hidden oasis located in a gravel parking lot off W. Carefree Hwy. The moment we walked into this unique establishment which is part dive bar and part grill, we received a genuinely warm and friendly greeting from Paul, the kitchen manager. This one off eatery established in 1969, hasn’t changed a bit according to Paul. This place serves mostly burgers, hotdogs, chili, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and soup with chips, no fries. Just pull up a picnic table with a red & white plastic checkerboard table cloth and place your order with their amazing staff who will bring a complimentary bowl of their delicious chili to sample. The meats are locally sourced. My wife and I both ordered bacon jalapeño cheeseburgers. (with a side of chips) We both felt transported back in time. These are your mother’s homemade cheeseburgers & chips. Absolutely delicious with flavor for days, cooked to a perfect medium temperature. Very chill very patriotic vibe. Highly recommend!! Surprise fun find returning from Lake Pleasant. Have driven by this place often, the building does not have a sign. The only sign is a small sign along the roadside. The atmosphere is definitely casual with an old west vibe. Glad we stopped this time. This seems to be a local hangout with people greeting each other as they came in. Serves burgers, sandwiches, soup, chili and salads. At the next table, chili was served. Looked and smelled really good, but we had already ordered. Our server, Brigette, was helpful and nice. She said it would take about fifteen minutes because so many came in at once. Enjoyed a crisp salad as we waited. In less than 15 minutes we were served our burgers. Burgers were excellent, juicy, sizzling hot and done just right. They are cash only. Yum!

Around the time dirt was born, this was the only place you could get a cold beer, a hot burger, and load your cooler with live bait — and even MORE beer — on the way to a lazy day at Lake Pleasant. These days, if you’re lucky enough to even find this ‘hidden in plain sight’ slice of Arizona Americana, a pleasant surprise awaits. Wild Horse is a literal meat and potato (chip) operation that no POS corporation could ever replicate. It’s OLD SCHOOL AF and a place where majestic buffalo would still roam if they didn’t have their heads bolted to the wall behind the bar. You really gotta try this place. The guys working at WHW are laid back and chill, the burgers are lit, and the prices won’t give you wallet shivers. If you come, bring cash. They don’t speak plastic here.

Food was good. Had a burger which was one of the best I've had. Also tried a Philly Cheesesteak which was actual chopped steak. It was flavorful and cooked very well. The hot dog was just ok. In my opinion a hot dog should be at least as long as the bun, which was not the case. But for food I'd give it 4.5 stars. The 3 star rating is because of the service. We walked in to one large table seated and two customers at the bar. We sat at the bar and after 10 minutes of our arrival were the only customers left. We chose Wild horse because ae really needed a drink and to let loose a bit from a stressful few weeks. We are very fun and witty and love good banter and lively conversation. Our attempt at this with the bartender boiled down to basically one word answers and no attempts to hold any conversation with us. It was quite a buzzkill since it was the perfect opportunity to represent Wild Horse and have some enjoyment especially in these darker times. Finally, at the end we were stunned to learn this is a cash only establishment. Never saw any sign about that, nor was it told to us before we ordered. Luckily, we had enough to cover the bill and a sizable tip that was never acknowledged or thanked. We had a much better conversation with the cook who came out and at least joked with us a bit. This place could be a goldmine - even now during this pandemic. If we go back it will be for...

Update: We returned today 3/13 and our experience was quite different. When we first arrived there were no tables so we left and came back an hour later. Luckily, this time there was 1 table available. We sat down and initially the service was good. However, when my wife and I stepped away to use the restroom the two female servers immediately started hassling our son that he needed to leave because they needed our table. So, wait until the adults leave and hassle a teenager? Classy. When we returned from the restroom, the women were very rude. We had intended to spend quite a bit more money there, but decided that we weren’t giving them another penny beyond what we had already ordered. The gentleman there was awesome, as he always has been, but the women were reason enough not to return. We know it was busy, but some advice, if you want to stay that way it would help to be nicer to your customers. We were regulars but we will definitely have to reconsider ever going back. Based on the comments of people around us, I know we weren’t the only ones who felt this way. Very disappointing.

Delicious burgers and fast,...
