Mountain Top Cafe — Restaurant in Phelan

Got lucky and tripped across this gem. Great service, wonderful food, an extensive menu with some options you don’t see all the time - at least not where we usually travel. The portions were generous but not ridiculous, more importantly the food was served hot - we travel and eat out enough to really appreciate when the hot food arrives hot. Biscuits were fluffy, tortillas with the machaca were soft and tasty. The home fries were real potatoes, not the pre-cooked frozen potatoes served these days. My sausage patties were tasty and the omelet was almost too full of green chilies and tomatoes. Our server was prompt and professional while still being friendly. They were decorated for Halloween and I loved it, some may think it is over the top but it shows you are at a unique diner not a cookie cutter chain. Good hot coffee, nothing fancy just a good cup of joe. Bathrooms are small - one seat, no stalls, but clean and they actually have paper towels. Friendly,enthusiastic waitress who’s worked there for several years- she’s young and she’s still there… rare these days.

Plenty of napkins, large serving of sweet,soft butter for the matching big,fresh yeast roll AND it was all ready at the counter before I got inside.

No industrial/institutional canned food!

VERY homey, Excellent bathrooms.

There are towing signs on the building but that is for cars- NOT Big Trucks (Yes,I did ask).

Overnight parking is fine- Keep it clean.

I knew when we walked In 15m before breakfast was over and we’re told we could not order breakfast it was going to be bad. We spent 50m in there. Spoke with our waitress once when she took our order. The young man was helpful with serving food, initial drinks, and giving us 1 refill on a tea (per my husbands request). No one else was as fortunate to get refills. The remainder of the time our waitress stayed behind counting the cash drawer. We asked another waitress if I could have a to go order. She never came back. I had to go up to the counter and ask for this. Our bill was close to 150 for okay food, no drink refills, and terrible service. Prices are crazy for the quality and the amount of food you get.
