4.5 STARS. Stopped in for dinner on a Saturday at 6:45 PM. Great service. Very clean and comfortable. Pretty darn good overall. One of the photos is our basket of Fried Green Tomatoes. The photo was taken after we'd already dived into them. They were, maybe, the best I've ever had. Consisting of 7 large slices, they were as hot as could be. Our helpful and friendly waitress told us that each order is one entire tomatoe. Nicely seasoned. The batter was very crispy and thin, yet when sliced with the plastic knife the batter adhered well so that I was able to dip it the ranch sauce with my plastic fork. I had a Half Rack of Ribs which came with 2 sides. The ribs were very good, delicately smoked (not too much smoke), moist and too tender to remain attached to the bone when bitten and pulled. The Half Rack was 6 meaty rib bones. They were served with a sauce which was already applied. I like fries but I opted not to have them because they are made from frozen and the waitress said they were shoestring style: not my favorite (photos provided by other reviews show the fries to NOT be shoestring style). When I asked if the Brunswick Stew and Baked Beans were good she said they were made in-house an customers like them. The Brunswick was great and the Beans were ok. My wife had Pulled Pork, Sweet Potato Crunch, and Cole Slaw. The Pulled Pork was excellent and a nice portion. The Sweet Potato Crunch was Excellent and the Cole Slaw was just ok. Both dinners came with a "run of the mill" dinner role (why to so many southern BBQ places serve bread like this. Why bother?) The sauces can make or break a BBQ meal. The three sauces were a mild smoky one that was ok, a mustard sauce that wasn't spicy enough for me, and a spicier sauce that was about a 6.5 out of 10. This last one was my favorite of the three. I'd...
Read moreFirst time here. I like to try all kinds of BBQ places and this was one I hadn’t tried yet and it’s only 10 minutes from my house.
The inside of it looks like a rustic cabin. I kinda like how they did it. The service was good and attentive. There weren’t very many people inside at 12:30 on a Saturday.
I ordered the brisket plate with fried corn and baked beans. I’ve never seen brisket served with bbq sauce on it but that how it came. I’m not sure who the pit master is but they did a poor job trimming the brisket. The slices I got had the deckle fat still on it. Customers are paying by the pound, you shouldn’t be serving them slices of brisket where literally half the slice was fat. To make matters worse, the brisket tasted like roast beef so they must have wrapped it too early and it steamed in its own juices. Brisket=Bad
The friend corn was corn on the cob deep fried. Or that’s what I was told. In reality, they boil the corn in advance and then toss it in the deep fryer to warm it back up. The corn was waaaay over cooked. Fried corn=Bad
The baked beans were just ok. Nothing special. They most likely used canned beans and put an extra sauce in them. Baked beans=Marginal
I wanted to get a 2 meat platter but they don’t offer it here so I ordered a BBQ plate (Pulled pork, no sides) for $7. The pork was chopped fine. It was the best thing I ate. Pulled pork=Ok
The brisket was $20 and I was not happy that literally half of the plate was fat. Good BBQ joints make sure to trim properly before cooking. Deckle fat doesn’t render down.
I can say I tried this place but don’t see a...
Read moreAs a proud Texan, I have high standards when it comes to barbecue. In my book, good barbecue means the meat is juicy and fresh. Southern Smoke Barbecue claims to be the 'home of the no sauce needed,' but my experience begged to differ. The brisket was disappointingly dry, leaving me longing for some flavorful sauce to liven it up. To make matters worse, the food arrived cold, further diminishing the dining experience. The service didn't fare any better, as our waitress displayed unprofessionalism that marred the meal. I mentioned the issue with the cold brisket to her, and she took it to the back to heat it up. However, upon its return, she said if the brisket is good enough and the brisket was piping hot to the point where I burned myself. It was unfortunate, left me spitting out the food in pain. She did nothing about the situation after the fact I burned my mouth. While the lack of sauce and dry brisket left much to be desired, the extreme heating up of the dish was a safety concern that could have resulted in a burn. I do appreciate the effort to address the problem promptly, but the execution left much to be desired. OH and also there too over priced for a brisket that taste like your eating a...
