Today I went with a friend and my son to Allen and Son BBQ for what I remembered to be the best bbq I had ever tasted in my life. I travelled about 45 minutes to be gravely disappointed. To begin with, when I had this wonderful bbq food, it was at the Chapel Hill location where Keith Allen the "son" part of the name was making from scratch all the food except the vanilla ice cream which his wife made. You could taste the flavor of the food made from love, hard work and attention to detail. I also found out today that he had closed his place of business after over 40 years of owning it about two years ago. As it turned out, Mr. Keith Allen has sold the original Allen and Son in Pittsboro started by his father when he closed his business to different owners. It had been several years since I had been back to the one in Chapel Hill and was unaware that he had closed and sold off the original location. Well, I can't complain about the service because there was none. The menu did not have the mouth watering ribs that Keith Allen cooked back in the day. I settled for a chopped rib plate and all I could taste was the vinegar and nothing else. I was expecting more flavor than that. The rib eye steak sandwich was chewy and the brunswick stew was too sweet. The tea was alright but nothing to write home about. In concluding this review, please keep in mind that I am bias to the flavor and attention to detail that Keith Allen brought to bbq and his namesake, Allen and Son. I apologize if I have hurt anyones feelings in my review, but I needed to let someone know how I felt since I take my...
Read moreBest BBQ spot in the Triangle. Homely country-style ambiance, excellent customer service from the super-friendly staff, and fast servings. The sweet Southern hospitality spirit moves here. Our waitress was professional and nice.
Went here with fam for a relative's Birthday, and I enjoyed the restaurant's cozy atmosphere. Heard they've been in business about more than 20 years since I was born, and that this is their 2nd location.
Pork BBQ is their specialty here, so I ordered the big BBQ plate that comes with 2 sides of your choice and hush puppies. Amount seems fair for $16 price and they have a lot of classic sides to choose from, including fries, onion rings, coleslaw, fried okra, baked beans, corn, etc,.
Some of us ordered a burger plate (no bread) with 2 sides and hugh puppies. Food tasted fresh. Pork barbecue was well-cooked, great with vinegar, which I had to ask for. Vinegar was fantastic. You can also order the Pork BBQ as a sandwich.
We also had banana pudding for dessert. Haven't tried their milkshakes so might try it next time. Allen & Son reminds me of Cook Out with its Southern-style fast food offerings but I'm not sure if their burgers are good because I...
Read moreI came up to Commie Hill to visit a sick friend in the hospital. I had heard so much about Allen & Son I decided to give it a try. Let me start by saying I didn't mind sitting outside listening to the traffic on 15 501 as it was way too warm in the dining room. I didn't like having to place my order at the take out window out front and not having access to barbecue sauce and ketchup and waiting to see how the tea refill goes. But the french fries were very good and appeared to be home made. A little over cooked for my taste but good. The slaw was ground very fine and had little to almost no Duke's mayonnaise but the owner is a unc fan. The barbecue was very tasty could have had some more sauce for my taste but that is why I didn't like sitting outside. Personally for the money I would rather ride to Dudley and eat at Grady's or get up early one Saturday morning and ride to Beulaville and stand in line at Sid's. But if you are in the area I would recommend stopping in and giving it a try. A bit pricey at $14 for a plate of barbeque but still it's pretty good. By the way they did refill my tea but had to go...
