Terrible ... Simply terrible.
Since arriving in SE Michigan, I have been searching for good Thai food. When I saw the rating for Thai Spoon, I thought I might have found it. Unfortunately, it was not very good.
My first impression entering the restaurant was it is a bit of a hole in the wall. Worse was that it was terribly cold in the restaurant. The thermostat on wall showed 59F. Seriously? When the temperature on the street is 38F, you need to turn on the heat!
Second, we ordered at the counter 5 items. Total cost was just under $30. They call you to pick up your order at the counter. The food was prepared pretty quickly in under 10 minutes. Now to the food ...
Soup Tom Yum with chicken had no vegatables and although the broth tasted okay, the soup was COLD. I guess when the restaurant is like a refrigerator, it's hard to expect hot soup?
The Basil stir fry had very little basil and was very very salty. Additionally, it had lots of liquid that even the side of "al dente" rice provided could not soak up.
For the Thai salad we were given just chopped vegetables with tofu that looked like it was fried yesterday … I can do that myself at home! And no sauce/dressing? I double check menu description and yes, it is supposed to have peanut sauce. I ask for sauce at the counter and they gave me a thick, dark brown sauce that didn’t taste like peanuts. It is so thick that it is more like a paste and not easy to add and mix with the salad. Disappointing.
Shrimp fresh rolls were okay with the sweet vinegar dipping sauce, but nothing that was so good that you would remember this the next time you craved Thai food.
The only good thing was the Thai Iced Tea. It was very tasty.
I have tried eaten real Thai food in Thailand and have found some good Thai restaurants in my travels (see my other reviews). Unfortunately, this restaurant is not good. I cannot recommend this restaurant. In fact, I strongly suggest...
Read moreCrazy, over the top sweet. Green curry that was 85% cloyingly sweet liquid and drunken noodles that were 97% sickly sweet noodle. Fried shrimp and chicken rolls were quite good but served with a sauce that is seemingly a clear, flavorless sugar water. I half wonder if patrons are being pranked. Heat spice levels were quite high. Otherwise food was reasonably well prepared. Nothing was burnt. Nothing was undercooked. I'd just take the six-year-old "make everything taste like candy" recipes and toss those out. This whole review is based on only 3 dishes in one visit, but the fact that two were ridiculously sweet and the third came with an otherwise flavorless, thin pure sugar syrup (maybe there was some vinegar in there) makes me think this restaurant is run by somebody who can only taste sugar at 1/100th of the average person.
The service was fine. The dining room is nice enough. The food seems to have been carefully prepared. The value was poor in my opinion. $11 each for entrees that were either 85% sauce or 97% noodle with only 3 small shrimp and what seems like less than one egg worth of scrambled egg just seems like a bad deal to me.
I think the biggest issue for me is the recipes. I do not fault them for doing things poorly. I got my order correctly and they clearly were careful with the food. I just didn't like...
Read moreWe ordered 6 lunches on 4/4/23 and they were delivered by GrubHub. I had a question about my order which was Fried Garlic Black Pepper Beef Stir Fry ($11.09) with added broccoli ($1 for 3 tiny pieces), added white onion ($1 for 6 slivers), and extra beef ($2 for a total of 6 pieces). It came in a big round container which had a 1/4" of liquid, 4 water chestnut slices, and some scallions. My question was if the portions are always so small (much less than 1/4 of the container had food) or did the driver help themselves to my lunch? The top of the container was smashed in. I didn't have a chance to call yesterday so I called today and tried to explain my dissatisfaction. The man I spoke to asked a number of questions about the order then said I should have called yesterday and blew me off. So I told him that was not a good way to handle a complaint and said I would air it on Yelp instead. He was silent so I did. I paid way too much for what I got or the GrubHub driver also had lunch on me. Either way, the man at Thai Spoon should have at least offered some sort of explanation - not the lame "you should have called yesterday". They won't get anymore of my money unless he responds with a satisfactory answer. BTW, he understood everything I said so he can't hide behind his accent. Very...
