Tough call between 3 and 4 stars; I usually reserve 4 for fine dining, but have a warm spot in my heart for this place based on its history.
It has been lousy for years, but new management brings quality food and professional service (something that has been lacking for almost as far back as I can remember).
Menu is huge! and my first try here was a Monte Christo for lunch. A little unconventional in that the sandwich was not deep fried. Instead it was simply surrounded by French Toast; a lighter incarnation, but nevertheless delicious (as was the accompanying cole slaw). Service was impeccable.
Second outing was today for brunch; place was full at 11am mid-week, so it seems the word is spreading. Even full, service was impeccable. Food came out hot, with no delay, and we were checked on no less than 4 times during our meal; twice to see if everything was alright, and twice asked if we wanted our drinks refilled.
Spinach mushroom omelet and eggs benedict. Both delicious. Real hollandaise and nicely poached eggs (although ham instead of Canadian bacon - which was clearly mentioned on the menu - and was very tasty ham, nicely grilled). Hash Browns were light, crispy, and almost buttery... not dripping in tasteless grease like other places around.
This place is two for two, and highly recommended. So nice to have another "go to" spot in this neck...
Read moreGreat place. Excellent service! Tons of options on their menu, though another friend and I were both disappointed that the pecan-crusted rainbow trout was no longer available. Seems like the food is a bit hit-and-miss, but mostly hits and large portions. Skip the fish and chips. Very obviously came out of a big frozen bag. The breading is literally hard and flavorless. Luckily they at least have malt vinegar to drown it in. I went with several friends after a day of hiking. One friend got a Gardenburger. Seemed ok. One got the Club Sandwich. Huge and tasty. One got the country fried steak which she was happy with. One got the Ruben sandwich, which looked... small, by comparison to everything else. Not a lot of meat on it. The pièce de résistance was the beef pastie. They put it in immediately before taking our other orders because it takes 20 minutes to bake, and I can see why! It was huge. It would easily last me three meals if I wasn't terribly hungry. Stuffed with beef, potatoes, onions, and covered in brown gravy. When I come back, I'm getting that and splitting it was somebody. Oh, and they have freshly-made fruit turnovers that looked excellent, but I was stuffed. Should have gotten one to go. Next time I'll be sure to leave room! Definitely recommended... just not the...
Read moreI don't know what the reasoning is of those giving any more stars than 1! I have tried this place 3 times before I finally made the decision to NEVER eat here again! Staff and manager are rude and could care less about the diners likes, dislikes and will not listen to the voice of reason while explaining that your food didn't come the way you ordered it, came out cold even the second time you "NOOKED" it and bring it to my table and think that it's ok to bring me a SCORCHING hot plate with burnt edges around my entire Umm... Well it's supposed to be called FOOD but it's not even worthy of that title and as if it couldn't get any worse, cold in the middle and a manager that has the worst table-side manners I've ever seen! Get out of this business if you can't handle your front of house staff, Back house staff... Mainly Cooks, line Cooks!! How embarrassing it should be to call yourself Cooks or Chef or anything other than Crooks! I'm a local here and wouldn't recommend going here and have told out-of-towners looking for a place to eat to choose anything else but Sportsman's Hall!! I just don't get...
