Absolute worst experience EVER.
Saturday afternoon, I had mentioned to my daughter that I had never even been inside The Straw Market, so she suggested that we stop there for lunch.
Once inside, we saw a sign that stated āLunch Special - chili, breadstick, drink, and a bakery item - $6ā. We both decided to order the lunch special. Thatās where the crazy started.
The kid at the counter didnāt know how to ring in the special. The other kid came out from the kitchen to show him how and questioned what we meant by the $6 lunch special. We showed him the sign. He rung it in and went back to the kitchen. We paid for our meal and within minutes we were told they were out of chili, but they could give us potato soup instead. We agreed to that. We sat for 10-15 minutes but what we could hear them struggling to figure out what bowls to put the soup in. The kid at the register called the owner to ask what bowls to use and was told that the potato soup was for an order that night. We were made aware that they had no soup for us and asked what else we would want. We told them we wanted a refund.
After getting our money, we took the bakery items we selected when we paid for our order and our sodas (the Dr. Pepper was out of order) and headed for home. When I unwrapped what we thought was a red velvet cookie (the kid at the counter had no idea what it was and nothing in the bakery display was labeled), I noticed the discoloration on the chocolate chips. Iām thinking this is what happens to chocolate when it gets old. That aside, we ate the cookie and the brownie because thatās all we got for our lunch. While eating the cookie, I noticed something in my mouth that was crunchy. WHAT?!? I dug it out of my mouth to find that it was egg shell!!!
Never again will I go to The Straw Market.
My college-aged son told me, āMom, donāt ever buy anything that they make at The Straw Market, we only ever bought the pre-packaged stuff when we would go there back in high...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI love the idea of the Straw Market. Small, unassuming and old (character). I've had a few different cinnamon rolls, breakfast burritos, and breakfast sandwiches from here and it's always been good. Yesterday I wanted to introduce my wife and mom to Straw Market, and it was a mistake.
Some of the good things: My daughter loved her nutella crepe and they are very generous with the filling. I absolutely love the salsa. Not sure if it's homemade or store bought but it's great. The dead center of the cinnamon rolls were pretty good, but we got the pan scrapings due to it being the last of the sheet so it was a bit of a hodgepodge of a serving.
Some of the issues were as follows: Cinnamon rolls were dry and hard all around the edges, the loaded breakfast platter has way too many onions and peppers, and they need to be chopped a heck of a lot smaller than they are. I dislike onions but I like peppers. But numerous bites were nothing but a mouthful of one or the other which was overwhelming. It's better when you can get a bite of everything. They also weren't watching the utensil containers, we had to ask for them refill the forks. No big deal, but a small thing that could easily be refilled without being told.
I am on a cold streak of introducing people to places. I get a lot more critical in my review of a place when I'm the schlub who recommends it to someone and then it's very much below what I told them it would be. Word of mouth is so critical for small business and I am trying to help support places like this, but they need to do the little things to earn the positive word of mouth on a consistent basis. A series of seemingly small but untimely slip ups can really hinder that word of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe went to Straw Market today with our adult son and his wife and children for breakfast. We knew Straw Market had new owners, and we wanted to try it out. Their cinnamon rolls are so good. We were so disappointed when on a Saturday morning at 8:30 am they were sold out of cinnamon rolls. :0( We ordered full breakfast meals with toast (as no cinnamon rolls), it was not the same. The full breakfast did not fill my husband or son. The hash browns were such a tiny portions, maybe a 1/4 th of a small potato. We were the only ones there that had not received our food, it took around a half hour. The quality of food was good, but such tiny portions. No one came out to see if they could get us something or see if we liked it. One of our grand-daughters had the strawberry crepes with Nutella. She loved this and it looked really good. Our daughter-in-law got an omelet, and it was a good size and she liked it. I really wanted to like this, but if you are known for cinnamon rolls, you shouldnāt be out at 8:30 am. Several other people came in and we heard their disappointment as they were told the cinnamon rolls were sold out and they would have...
