WE LOVE COAL OIL JOHNNY'S
We have always had wonderful food and friendly service. We live an hour away and would make special trips just to eat there. We have recommended many times to friends and coworkers.
UNTIL TODAY! We were treated like we slaughtered a litter of puppies in the dining room! Our waitress was initially friendly and suddenly her demeanor changed and she became very rude. Our food came out burned. All of it. Bacon, eggs and hashbrowns. Our waitress would not interact with us after slamming our food down until she tossed the check on the table without saying a word. We saw several of the staff peaking out of the kitchen at us. The girl that cashed us out was very rude to us. Even the lady writing on the specials board gave us dirty looks as she was putting up the specials.
I don't know what we could have done to deserve the treatment we received. I don't know if we were confused with someone else or they chose us to be rude to. We have never been this disrespected at a restaurant. We will not return. I am saddened by this because we have enjoyed going to Coal OIL Johnny's. We have been there 30-40 times in the past couple of years and will not be going back.
Everything that happened seemed very intentional and should not happen to anyone. My wife even felt the need to call and speak with the owner. We don't leave bad reviews. But this was...

We visited on a Sunday morning with a friend that had grown up in the area and told us we had to try the place. Glad we did.
The dining area is small but I think they have additional seating upstairs. Inside it is sort of the local diner vibe. Game machine by the door, place mats covered with advertising from local businesses and a wait staff made up of a good portion of the owner's family... All wonderfully friendly and warm. It is NOT dirty or dingy in any way. The family clearly takes pride in the place.
The food though... Wow! They have an all day breakfast menu as well as regular lunch and dinner selections. Being Sunday brunch we went with breakfast choices naturally.
The potatoes are awesome. Cooked golden brown and perfect. Our eggs were all cooked correctly without exception. I had the corned beef hash with two eggs over medium. Holy smokes... The hash was amazing. Exactly as it should have been... Crusty grilled outside and full of flavor. Bread choices include homemade bread (toasted), Texas toast, and your regular wheat and white breads.
Our experience was great! Food was delicious, staff was friendly, and the place is clean with a small town diner charm. If you are in the area, definitely a...
Read moreI like visiting restaurants where you can see community happening. I was staying with a friend for the weekend and I was told this is where we have to go after church. The charm of the small town eatery is present before you even step through the door. I saw customers holding the door for one another, greeting one another, teasing as they entered the sanctuary after their church service on a Sunday afternoon. It was obvious people didn't just eat here, they interacted on a personal level. I generally skip the chains when traveling and this is why. The food was good, the prices were fair, the service was friendly, but I love seeing community on a deeper level. The waitresses knew their regulars, treated them more like family than customers but were quick to welcome an out of towner as well. If I'm ever in the area again I will definitely be returning to Coal Oil Johnny's. If I could pack a restaurant up and take it with me I would, but then Pleasantville would be a little less pleasant. This place is a must for anyone that appreciates the spirit of...
