I am absolutely shocked at the positive ratings that this restaurant has received. My husband and I went out for dinner here about 6 months ago, and we both ordered complete dinners and drinks. I found two long hairs inside my fajitas, and it was absolutely disgusting. To make the situation even worse, my Fajitas Plate tasted like a mix between a bad Chinese meal, and plane tomato juice. My husband’s Enchilada Plate was almost as bad, as it was dry and tasteless (no moisture, juiciness, or sauce whatever) with zero spiciness and no Mexican spice flare.

I normally do not take the time to write bad reviews, however our meal at The Black Door was the worst meal that we have ever paid for. We should have complained to the owner, but we were too disappointed (because we love Mexican food, and we’re so looking forward to a good restaurant to frequent,) and disgusted. But the only thing the manager/owner could have offered was an apology, and perhaps a free meal, which we would never have...

DO NOT EAT HERE!!! After a long day of driving from San Jose my husband and I was hoping to get some edible burritos. Unfortunately, we did NOT get anything close to being edible. The food had no flavor worst Mexican restaurant ever! We walked in to see a waitress with a HUGE attitude, then we look to our right and see a young man in the kitchen (he probably just graduated high school). How can a restaurant have a literal kid as a chef who most likely hasn't even gone to culinary school? Highly unprofessional!!! Also, I didn't want to add this but the "Chef" (the literal child) was picking his ear and then continued to cook. Super disgusting!!! My husband and I are not from around this area, but like 2 years ago we went to a much better and non-ear-picking chef restaurant. The little Mexican restaurant in point arena sadly closed. Much rather Pirates Cove than whatever this disgusting food was. Oh and also will be letting my lawyer know about the teen working as a chef.

I REPEAT DO NOT...

After visiting the Sonoma Coast and Fort Ross, we started heading north on our way home. Being it was near 1 pm, we started looking for someplace to eat, and our research brought us to The Black Door. We stopped in on a Tuesday, which happens to be "Taco Tuesday". We were greeted and offered a seat wherever we liked, as the restaurant was not crowded. We chose a table in their enclosed patio. After perusing the menu, I landed on their Tomales selection. However, upon ordering, I was informed they did not have chicken Tomales available. So, I opted for three of the "Taco Tuesday" shredded chicken tacos, for $1.99 each. My wife ordered a vegetable taco and a fish taco. After a little wait, our food was brought. It was presented well and was what we expected. The food was presented nicely and of appropriate portion size. We enjoyed the taste and flavor of our selections. We felt we chose well. If I am ever back in Gualala, I will certainly entertain returning to try another dish.

I ordered the taco plate. I enjoyed all three meat selections (beef, pork and chicken). The chicken taco was my favorite. The rice and beans was pretty standard as was the chips and salsa. So the overall quality and quality was good. Filtered water is a nice touch. Service was a disappointment as there were only 2 tables being served when I was there. The only time I actually saw a server was when I placed my order, when the meal was brought to my table and when I paid my bill at the counter. Other than that•••the two servers just hid out in the back/kitchen. Needless to say I don’t leave tips for service, unless it’s deserving. Sorry for venting. I won’t be going back.

I hope you keep your legal counsel on speed dial, because you’ll sue this place after you experience how tasty it is! The torta is worth serving a 20 year sentence, the enchilada plate is more jam packed with flavor than a county jail. Seriously consider this place for your next Mexican grub sesh because the verdict is in, the black door is guilty of delicious taste-bud slaughter.
