I went here for a late lunch. I heard about this place on Facebook and wanted to come here for the history. It also has good reviews. I ordered the fried chicken dinner which comes with fries, coleslaw and bread. The chicken is very good and exactly what I was looking for. The chicken was hot and fresh. The skin was crispy and not overly seasoned and the meat was moist with good flavor. It comes with a ton of fries but just a little bit of coleslaw. I would have liked less fries and more slaw. The slaw was good and tasted fresh. The bread was also good. It was 2 thick slices of a baguette. It would have been nice to have some garlic butter or honey butter to put on it, (but I shouldn't be eating bread anyway). I only ate the drumstick and wing and took the breast and thigh home. I ordered the Goulash to take home. It is a generous amount and definitely will be 2 meals. I tasted it before putting it in the fridge. It's meaty and has a good flavor, but it's seasoned more like an Italian pasta dish rather than goulash. It also came with bread. The staff is friendly and seemed to know a lot of the people there. Lots of local regular patrons. This tavern was originally a one room, log building for travelers to stop when going to Chicago. I think it would be cool if the interior had an old log cabin look.

My FIL and his family have been going to the Old Tavern Inn for years. Whenever he goes to the Dowagiac area he must stop for their famous hot ham sandwich. I finally had the chance to try it for myself. It will not be the last time. Hot ham sliced thin and served warm. I had Swiss cheese added to mine. This sandwich comes as either half or whole. I’m sure the half is plenty big. But, it’s worth getting the whole. I ordered onion rings to go with my ‘ham sammich’ they were ok. I think they were of the frozen variety. I wish I would have taken a photo of the sandwich but was too excited to bite right into it. I had a bite of the fried white fish and it was delicious. The fried chicken looked fantastic and the fried pickle chips were awesome. You can pass some time playing pull tab tickets or live Keno. It’s not a large place. I imagine it gets busy for lunch and dinner. We went around 3 pm. There were a few people eating at a table and a few gentlemen having drinks at the bar.

I dropped by the Old Tavern Inn because I was interested in its claim of being Michigan’s oldest business. That is a cool feature, and there’s a nice booklet hanging near the bar that details the history, but the food and service were excellent too. The bartender was friendly and it seemed like a welcoming place. The food had big portions for decent prices, and the hot ham sandwich was way bigger than I expected. Both it and the cup of chili tasted great. If you’re in the area I’d definitely recommend giving the Old Tavern Inn a chance.

Where do I start? So there is a sign that says fast service guaranteed. This was not the case for us. So we got our sodas then placed our orders. Well, I ordered a side salad to be brought before my meal with French dressing. A salad was brought probably 20 minutes later with no dressing. I continue to sit and wait and steal the dressing. After about 20 minutes when the waitress did not come back, I used the ranch that she bought with my husband’s order of deep-fried mushrooms. Then 10 minutes later, she appears with the original dressing. So we start to eat our appetizers and we continue to wait for our meals to arrive which takes another 45 minutes to an hour of us sitting in that very loud, over cried tavern/restaurant, waiting for our main course. When the waitress appeared again at another table, my mother stated that we were still waiting for our food, and the waitress said to her in a rude manner that she would get the food when they had the food done. So she disappeared into the kitchen and it was another 20 minutes before we would see her again finally bringing out the food stating that she was not bringing it out even though it wasn’t completely done and we would have to wait for the bread And anything else we ordered. Finally, we all get our meals and my daughter does not get the ranch that she ordered her chicken strip basket. My mom had ordered coleslaw to be brought to her before her meal, after 20 minutes of the waitress, not bringing it to her. When she brought the appetizers, I made a statement about it, and she brought her coleslaw in a condiment cup. But then when she brought the meal, she brought her a full cup of coleslaw, indicating that they absolutely did not know how to keep our order together or get it there on a timely manner. The waitresses appeared unbothered by our table, just sitting there as they rushed around us to get the new customers that were coming in and take care of the customers that were finished with their meal so the service was absolute crap in spite of the sign. We finally had had enough and it was about to storm so we had to track down the waitress to get boxes and to pay for our meals so we could leave. Because she has zero interest of returning to our table. It appeared at all. That being said, the only compliment I could actually get this restaurant was that the dinner itself was delicious and outstanding. The side salad not so much because I didn’t have anything in it besides lettuce cheese and cucumber, and wasn’t delivered with the proper dressing. My husband did enjoy the deep fried mushrooms and we all enjoyed our main dish but will I ever return there? Absolutely not. Would I ever recommend this place to a friend or family member?...
