We went to eat here on a Saturday around 5pm. There weren’t very many cars in the parking lot so we thought we were in a good spot. We were greeted fairly quickly at the front. Said it was for three and told to find a place wherever we wanted to sit. We chose an open booth. We sat there for about 7-10 minutes without anyone greeting us at the table with menus. Finally the server who told us to pick a spot had a dishrag and some menus. She wiped the table and dropped the menus off. She didn’t take our drink orders just yet though. Then she came back with a kids menu for our 8 year old and got our drink order. The menu looked good and we were hungry. We considered an appetizer but decided against it. After waiting for our drinks and having them brought out, my wife wasn’t yet ready and asked for a couple of minutes. The couple of minutes was more like another 10 minutes. Finally we were able to order and the salads and hush puppies my wife ordered came out pretty quick. The ranch dressing was delicious and my wife really liked the hush puppies. They weren’t seasoned so she said they went well with the butter and honey that came with them. Our food came out in another 10 minutes which was quick. My wife got a fried crab cake and our son got a cheeseburger. My wife said that the crab cake was mostly meat which was good but it lacked flavor and needed sauce. The oil on the cake seemed to have soaked in too much according to her. Our son didn’t like the cheese burger because they charred it. The inside was a good texture but the edges were burnt according to him. I tasted it and it was pretty charred for no reason on a kids burger. I wanted fish n chips and I had a choice of fish. I usually like haddock for fish and chips but they didn’t have that. They had catfish, rockfish, Cod, and something else I don’t recall. I chose the rockfish. It was not good. Either the fish wasn’t fresh or as I suspect, the oil was old or mixed with old. Because the fries and also my wife’s crab cake tasted like old oil. You know when all you taste in you mouth for an hour afterwards is oil, that’s when you know. It wasn’t a good and gave us both really bad indigestion on our drive home. Enough that my wife threw away her to go box once we got home because she felt so miserable. Our son was also pretty fixated on the fact that he didn’t get the ice cream sundae the kids menu had for his meal choices. They offered him a cake but he’s not really a cake person. But that isn’t really their fault. They apparently had a large party and ran out. It was nice they offered substitute. We gave the server a good tip because it wasn’t her fault that they had only two people working on a Saturday evening. I think when we were leaving another server was coming on shift. But still, they couldn’t keep up in the beginning and it left a bad first impression. We likely will not be back.

Note: the server did reduce the price on the rockfish plate. She made it the lunch price rather than the dinner price. I think it was about 8 dollars difference. I ate my salad and some of the fish and fries and the plate was full. $18 for a disappointing meal was not really enough in my estimation but that’s just me. I should have grabbed a photo of the plate but I was just ready to...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Randolph's, and it was an absolute delight from start to finish. As a seafood aficionado, I have high expectations, and this restaurant not only met but exceeded them in every way imaginable.

From the moment I stepped foot into the elegant and inviting ambiance, I knew I was in for something special. The attentive staff greeted me with warm smiles, and their knowledge of the menu and recommendations were exceptional. Their passion for the culinary craft and genuine desire to ensure a memorable experience shone through in their service.

Now, let's talk about the food—the true star of the show! The menu at Randolph's is a captivating celebration of the ocean's bounty, offering a remarkable variety of fresh, high-quality seafood options. Each dish was a masterpiece, showcasing the chef's mastery in creating flavors that danced on my palate.

The appetizers were a delightful prelude to the feast that awaited me. The buttery scallops seared to perfection, accompanied by a zesty citrus glaze, provided a burst of flavor that left me craving for more. The oysters, served on a bed of ice, were a taste of the sea at its finest—plump, succulent, and brimming with the essence of the ocean.

Moving on to the main course, I indulged in the most extraordinary lobster I've ever tasted. It was flawlessly cooked, tender, and bathed in a luscious butter sauce that elevated the natural sweetness of the meat. The sides were equally outstanding, especially the garlic-infused roasted potatoes and sautéed vegetables that complemented the seafood dishes impeccably.

What impressed me the most was the restaurant's commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing. The staff were knowledgeable about the origin of the seafood, ensuring that every dish was not only delicious but also ethically sourced. It's refreshing to see a restaurant that prioritizes environmental consciousness while delivering an unforgettable dining experience.

To complete the evening, I indulged in a delectable dessert. The lemon tart was a burst of tangy citrus goodness with a delicate, buttery crust that melted in my mouth. The perfect ending to an extraordinary meal.

Beyond the exceptional food and impeccable service, the attention to detail in every aspect of the dining experience was commendable. The elegant table settings, the carefully curated wine list, and the soothing background music created an atmosphere that was both refined and relaxing.

In conclusion, Randolph's is a seafood lover's dream come true. It sets the bar high with its outstanding cuisine, attentive service, and commitment to sustainability. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit for anyone seeking an unforgettable culinary journey through the ocean's bountiful treasures. I cannot recommend it...

As you approach, it looks like a run down building that feels closed. The parking lot is just a dirt, gravel lot. There's a boat ramp beside the building and we couldn't tell if the parking lot was for that or the restaurant. The landscaping is neglected. I know it's winter, but there are still plants that survive winter and decor that can be used to make the entrance feel inviting. They even have a piece of cardboard covering one of the windows from the inside. If they want that window opaque, use decorative window film at least. You enter at what almost feels like the back door. Crowded, cluttered. There was a beach decor, instead of a river decor. It felt like a restaurant you see on makeover shows where the owner hasn't updated it in the last 20 years. Some people mistake old for dirty, but it wasn't dirty-just older. There's one dining area close to the kitchen and another dining area along windows that view the river. There is an old gazebo in the back, which I hope they utilize in warm weather for outdoor seating but I couldn't tell for sure. The dining area is very quiet. No music, no air blowing, just quiet and the guys in the kitchen yelling. We felt like we had to talk quietly. There was only one other table with customers when we arrived and a table arrived after us, but it took awhile to get our drinks and then to get our food. The waiter was extremely kind, no complaints there. I wanted steamed shrimp but they ran out. They offered broiled or fried. I went with fried and my sides were a garden salad and macaroni salad. There was a seasoning in the macaroni salad I didn't like so I didn't eat it, but I did enjoy the garden salad. The hush puppies were overcooked but still decent tasting. The fried shrimp was fried perfectly. Not a thick batter, not over-fried. Tasted really good and that's the reason we went there, I was craving shrimp. I recommend the fried shrimp if you end up visiting. The view from the table was relaxing. Full view of the river. You'd think the traffic on the bridge would be distracting but it isn't. The large windows allow you to see the entire river, shoreline to shoreline. I feel like the owners could capture the essence of this location better and make it a destination cafe or bar. Likely will not return.

Just had a magnificent late lunch here. I had the butterfly fried shrimp, twice baked potatoes and asparagus. The food was amazing! My server was incredible-gave me enough attention-but did not pester me while enjoyed my meal. The view, overlooking the river was wonderful and quite peaceful. I will be back here!

Update to my review because today's experience was the opposite. The owner waited on me today. As I sat down I brushed my hand across the table top. The owner took our drink order, then turned back around and asked me if I thought the place was dirty. I was embarrassed, and said no, it's just something I do, or have always done. I do it at home, it's just a quirk I have. The owner seemed offended and advised me that if I do think it's dirty he could assure me the place was cleaned this morning. All our food was overcooked or burnt, I was never once asked if I needed anything, if anything was alright, if I needed a refill, and I was watched by the owner while I ate. The owner would only address the gentleman I had with me. I felt so uncomfortable I couldn't eat. I brought a table of 4 with me in early December and we dropped almost $300 here in one meal. I missed our waitress today. She's always so nice, we have pleasant chats, and we always make sure to help her clean up the table. There was no wait staff today. I'm going to leave my comments from my review when I first tried this place, but I won't be bringing anyone else here, I won't be recommending it to anyone anymore, and I won't be driving 40 min here because it was my new favorite place. I do hope the owner sees this. He could learn a lot from his staff, because they made all prior experiences superb. Just wow! We tried the calamari, the alligator bites, the mussels with bread, the broiled shrimp and scallops, the Mac n cheese, the hush puppies and the twice baked potato. Thank you for being the FIRST restaurant in VA I have been to who didn't overwhelm the mussels with garlic.. they have their own flavor and they were delicious (and huge). Cooked just PERFECT and so CLEAN. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the calamari, a tad overdone but the breading was gorgeous and they had good flavor. The hush puppies were also a tad dry but good flavor. Scallops were perfect, shrimp.. perfect.. the bread um heck to DIE FOR. The wait staff was awesome (made my day) and the prices VERY reasonable for the portions we received (very large). We CANNOT wait to come back and try something else. Truly a hidden gem.
