Unfortunately I have to edit my review since our last visit was so unpleasant. We took a friend there after bragging to her how great it was. First we were ignored for a good 15-20 minutes while 3 servers chatted nearby. They were engrossed in some private conversation. One was sipping on a drink. The restaurant was not busy. Finally one turned around and brought our waters which she was carrying all along so we knew she had seen us. Just chose visiting with coworkers over serving us. She took our drink orders and we didn’t see her or our drinks for another 20 minutes. We then waited 30 minutes for our food. Good thing we weren’t in a hurry! It was not worth the wait. The salmon Caesar that we’ve enjoyed so much in the past was mediocre because the salmon was overcooked and portion very small. The salmon dinner was extremely disappointing. We asked for blackened and it wasn’t. It was dry and overcooked. The mashed potatoes were gluey and tasteless. The vegetables were just ok. Overall not much better than a microwave meal. We ordered a second drink halfway through the meal and it took another 25 minutes to arrive. There were lots of empty tables and 4 servers that we could see. We chatted for a while after dinner as we had to apologize to our guest for taking her to such a lackluster place. When it was time to leave our server was nowhere to be found. We stood awkwardly in the middle of the aisle looking for some way to pay the bill since we never received a check. A good 5 minutes goes by and finally someone else came over to help us. Did they not even want our money? No one was friendly. We won’t be back. Extremely disappointed.

Old review below. Totally different now!!

A new discovery that we absolutely love. The people are great. Awesome bartender and I’m sorry I don’t remember her name. She made me the best margarita I’ve had in 10 years. Hand muddled with plenty of lime. We love the Caesar salad with salmon. It’s so great we have yet to try anything else but I’ve heard the whole menu is fantastic. The atmosphere is fun and casual. The prices are amazing. Three drinks and dinner for both of us $38. Where can you do that these days? We...

Everything went wrong with this place except the view. We chose the Sextant because the restaurant on Hayden island was experiencing technical difficulties due to a power outage. We were specifically looking for outdoor seating because it was such a warm and beautiful day. When we arrived the sign told us to seat ourselves. We found our initial seats on the lower patio. We then moved because of a loud an obnoxious group of drunk folks having a great time. All good in that respect. We are cool with people having fun. We just moved to a different area. Well, once we moved we became seemingly invisible to our server. She was so busy with the big group of drunk kids that she wasn't worried about serving us. Thankfully another waitress came to our rescue and got drinks started for us. She then let our waitress know that she had taken care of that! We then waited approximately 20 minutes longer for our server to finally take our order. Without an apology or even an offering of glasses of water on such a warm day (it was 91 that day) she finally asked what we wanted. My wife ordered the Halibut Fish and Chips and I ordered the California Crispy Chicken Burger. That came with guacamole and onions. I ordered without the onions. When we received our meals after another 15 minutes or so, our server didn't provide napkins, silver ware or water for the meals. I actually had to get up and ask the bartender for two glasses of water and after searching around on my own I found some napkins. She brought me a regular Crispy Chicken Burger and that was two dollars less on the menu. When I brought this to her attention, she did fix the bill but offered no sort of discount or anything to make her mistake right. I'm sure with better service this place would have been a whole different and better experience. Our server was horrible and it was very apparent that she was overwhelmed and not good at multi tasking. This was a one time try for us. We don't live to far away but Im not sure it would be worth the retry. Super...

I was wary to try this place due to the lower reviews but I went against my gut and did it anyway.

This was honestly one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had at a bar, beginning to end.

We walked in and were not greeted despite two ladies being behind the bar at the front. They were too busy talking to each other. First thing I noticed was that every table was filthy. Crumbs and sticky spots. Yet every table was empty. No food. So someone cleared those tables yet didn’t wipe them down…? We sat and had to have the server wipe it down.

I felt something crawl on my leg under the table.. lol. I wish this was an exaggeration. It was definitely a bug of some sort.

Servers were spaced out, ours kept taking her time talking to certain older male patrons and not paying attention to other tables. Tall blonde, looked like she was wearing a wig. The servers themselves spent a lot of time just talking amongst themselves.

Food was good until we realized one half of my turkey melt was COVERED in little fiber like hairs? It was almost like it had fallen onto a cloth napkin or shirt. Like tons of little fibers. I was so disgusted because I’d basically eaten the entire thing before realizing. My husband got the burger and said it was okay. The tartar sauce was watery however.

My husband also had to go up to the bar because he’d asked for a refill on his beer and it’d been 10 minutes with our server nowhere to be seen.

This place is definitely way below your average dive. Every mark was missed so we will not return. I just honestly left feeling...

Cheers. This is my Number 1 Pick for Dating, Meetings and Happy Hour in Portland after an extensive 2 year search. Great views, beach access for walks, Picnicking, Dating, Sunsetting, etc. Great value. It's next to Salty's which is an expensive Seafood restaurant also popular for dating, anniversaries, and events. Best value! If you want a beautiful setting during the 2022 inflationary economy and can't afford the inflated prices of other places go to The Sextant ... You should go regardless, but if you can afford Salty's you'll go there anyway 💁‍♂️ I mean its the exact same view and it also has an attentive staff, so? ... All that said .... The Sextant has inexpensive drink prices, great views and you'll see me there once in awhile and we can go for a walk on the Beach below it 😁😁🙂🤪. To the owner: (not you the customer, don't read 😅🙄 ... yea right, right? 🙂) I'd love to help you with your menu ... not the food necessarily but the "menu options and Happy Hour items" Congratulations to the Sextant Bar and Galley 🙂 HealthybyHeath's highest rated "Value" restaurant for food, drinks, romantic views, beach access, walks, etc.

I guess it depends on what you're coming here for. We came for breakfast which they only serve on weekends from 10 to noon. There was only one server/busser, but she was awesome. We had a good view of the river. But this is a bar. It's not a restaurant. Minors are not allowed. And the building is very run-down. But if you're just looking for a nice place to chill out and look at the river, have a few drinks, play a slot game, play some pool--this might be a good spot for you. It's pretty small inside. There's lots of parking. It's wheelchair accessible. As far as being a place to eat, it's pretty subpar. But our omelettes were excellent, as were the hashbrowns and sourdough. But it's kinda hard to mess that up, right? Anyway, this is a bar first and foremost. And I guess it's a positive thing that they serve breakfast, because most bars probably wouldn't do that! My dad got the two-egg breakfast, and he thought his eggs were done perfectly.
