My trip to Puerto Rico was filled with incredible moments, but if I had to pick one highlight, it would undoubtedly be my visit to The Hitching Post. This place isn't just a restaurant; it's an experience that captured my heart and taste buds in equal measure. I simply couldn't leave the island without a return visit! From the moment I walked in, I was captivated by the inviting atmosphere. But let's talk about the food – oh, the food! Every dish was a testament to culinary excellence. I indulged in a vibrant and fresh salad alongside a delicious chicken sandwich, both of which were incredibly satisfying (as seen in the attached photo!). The flavors were outstanding, leaving me wanting more with every bite. And for dessert? A delightful flan topped with succulent strawberries – a perfect ending to a magnificent meal. And then there's the piña colada. Seriously, don't even get me started! This wasn't just a drink; it was a revelation. Creamy, perfectly mixed, and garnished with those irresistible cherries, it was hands down the best piña colada I had during my entire trip. It truly elevated the whole dining experience. But what truly sets The Hitching Post apart is its unique charm: the horses! As an animal lover, being able to interact with these magnificent creatures was an absolute dream come true. The opportunity to touch and feed them, added an extra layer of magic to the visit. It's not every day you get to enjoy a fantastic meal and then step out to connect with such gentle animals. The Hitching Post is more than just a restaurant; it's a destination that combines superb cuisine with an unforgettable, heartwarming experience. If you're planning a trip to Puerto Rico, or even if you're a local, you absolutely must make time for The Hitching Post. It was the highlight of my trip, and I can't...
Read moreWe visited The Hitching Post after it came highly recommended, and it lived up to every bit of the hype. The drive alone is beautiful, but the food and atmosphere completely blew us away.
We started with a few tapas: the crispy potatoes, white bean hummus, and a special pork belly dish. Every bite was rich, flavorful, and cooked to absolute perfection. The hummus was especially smooth and bright, and the pork belly practically melted in our mouths.
We also had fresh coconut water sourced right from the property. It was crisp, refreshing, and unlike anything store-bought.
For entrées: • The kids had the “El Doble” cheeseburger and couldn’t stop raving about it. Honestly, I think it was the best burger I’ve ever had. The aioli took it over the top. • My husband got the churrasco steak, grilled just right and full of flavor with the house chimichurri. • I had the grouper, which was soft, buttery, and beautifully paired with marble potatoes and broccolini.
The staff was so kind and welcoming. Everyone we met took the time to talk with us, answer questions, and show us around the property. It felt like we were visiting old friends.
We also had the chance to chat with Jason, the owner. He was so generous with his time and knowledge. You can tell how much care and heart goes into every part of the experience.
This wasn’t just a dinner, it was a true highlight of our trip. If you’re anywhere near San Juan, make the short trip to Río Grande and go. You won’t regret it.
Edited to add the flan, which I can’t believe I forgot. It was velvety, smooth, creamy, and the perfect mixture of sweet and tangy. Truly one of the best...
Read moreFantastic mediterranean-style food and great cocktails, attentive staff, wonderful vibe, and really all around great experience. Jason, the chef, came out and introduced himself after we were seated and described the menu to my family of 6 (2 parents and 4 teenagers). We asked if he could just bring us everything on the menu, which is mostly small tapas style plates and a few entree size items, including two specials. He said absolutely and he took care of everything the rest of the way. Every dish was superb; standouts were the stuffed pepper, the pickled veggies, the crispy potatoes, the zucchini, and the churrasco. The Red Rum and the Sour Bit cocktails were our favorites. We closed the place down and then Jason offered us a quick tour of the stables (the restaurant is on the grounds of a nice ranch/hotel/event space). Jason and his partner/co-owner Elizabeth, who is from PR, have a great story of how they ended up opening this place; ask them about it when you meet them. Easy 20 min drive from the El Yunque coast hotels (we were at the Wyndham Rio Mar).
Two members of my family have asymptomatic celiac disease, so they just order non-gluten things when we eat out. This place asked about any allergies when we made our reservation, and then when we arrived followed up with us about what we couldn't eat and Jason made a couple of small changes to accommodate us. (With the exception of bread, the menu is nearly entirely GF as it is, though the grill and the fryer do have some gluten items like bread/wings...
