I wanted to give this place more than 3 stars but it's not there... Greeting at the door was fairly prompt. I was seated at a booth. The tables were not sticky so you can tell the staff is doing good maintaining cleanliness. Floors were clean. Drinks and nachos came out with speed. The wait for the food was not too bad. The restaurant at 30% capacity there was plenty of staff to keep up. The straw for the drink didn't come out until the food did. The plate portion size was appropriate yes, however it was not topped with the white cheese sauce it was supposed to come with. There was no return visit until I was about half way through the dish. (A different server) I asked her politely "was this supposed to come with white cheese sauce?". She paraphrased the words "cheese sauce" and without a second thought she promptly darted into the kitchen. Now I won't complain at all the speed of service as she almost immediately returned with my dish swimming in a sea of cheese sauce. However I was unable to taste anything after that. It also raised my concerns to the fact a half eaten dish had returned to the food prep line. I would have accepted the fact there was no cheese or just expected a side dish of the cheese to have been delivered to the table. But for the reviews sake in all honesty I must be blunt and give no more than 3 stars. The place is amazing given the effort of the staff and it's level of urgency.. however it can be the small things that make or break the visit. The straw, the late return visit to the table, the botched attempt to send the rest of my food and all it's flavors to a cheese laid grave. But my biggest concern was my dish returning to the kitchen half eaten. 5 stars to the staff for the urgency of the function of the restaurant. But 3 stars to...
Read moreWe live close but would typically rather drive to eat Mexican. Its o.k. but only b/c it's the only local option. The food is fair, meaning it is the least good Mexican I've eaten from the dozens I've tried. In this review I use my all time favorite of El Chico's as the 5 star experience & many others around the world I've tried. The fundamentals: Drinks are in glasses too tall & chunky for female hands & straws reach about an inch below the top. The chips are a bit thick & sometimes stale. The (all important) salsa has got to be made from canned tomatoes. The cilantro & few spices do not cover the canned taste. There are no fresh chunks of onions, jalapenos or tomatoes as far as I can tell. Pulsified salsa would be fine as long as the flavors we're there. The cheese dip is watered down to the point you can't eat it without it dripping everywhere. The entrees range from fair to good. Flavors are hit & miss. Service is fair. Cleanliness is good. My personal frustration is the inconsistencies, prices for the quality of food & a recent experience there. To save $ I planned to share an Entree with the Hubs & ordered a cheese dip for myself with the meal. The menu listed it as $3.99. But, I was brought out a styrofoam cup of very watered down dip with a lid on it. Strange to not be served in the usual bowl. I didn't question them but when we finished dining we were charged $12 for that dip. It cost more than my husbands large entree. The man at the register was very rude to us. With the menu only listing the $3.99 cheese dip we were blown away. We didn't order a huge to go dip, especially a watered down one. I have never paid $12 for cheese dip even when it was delicious. But, we were treated rudely & had to suck it up. If we go back, it will be cautiously. I doubt we will...
Read moreTypical Mexican food served fast and hot. I'm sorry but I didn't find a great difference between one Mexican restaurant and another. Seems to be the same offerings with a slight difference in salsa flavor. I don't mean that in an insulting way. It's just the way I see it.
The food that we ordered was good. The service polite and fairly responsive. The atmosphere was nothing special. Booths lined up along the edges with tables scattered in between. I distinctly noticed that there was nothing done to make you feel that this place is proudly and uniquely Mexican or actually special in any way. I wish they had done so. Perhaps they will in time.
Lastly, it is a very cold day today with snow flurries and a biting wind. Our work had us outside all morning and we were cold. We wanted to eat and get warm. One member of our group was particularly cold due to his complete exposure to the elements. He never quit shaking even when we left. The restaurant was not 'warm'. There was a chill that permeated the dining room that kept us from becoming truly comfortable. That is irritating to me. Customer comfort is paramount to me. The temperature and seating should be appealing as the food. It is hard to enjoy one without the other especially in outside...
