We dined here with our family to celebrate my sister's birthday. I have worked many years in the restaurant industry, and typically give places the benefit of the doubt when they are serving a larger party. Our server started out the night with a very unpleasant, inattentive attitude. The majority of the night, we had to ask the host stand for drinks because our server had not returned. Three of us ordered filets, medium rare. The steaks were served medium/med well. We did not complain, though this was the most expensive dish on the menu, and therefore should have been cooked properly. I ordered my salmon blackened (it came out completely unseasoned). Otherwise, the rest of the food in our party was cooked well and delicious. Before we left, I asked one of young ladies who had been helping us due to our servers inattentiveness, if they did anything special for birthdays. She quietly nodded and shrugged her shoulders as though to ask who it would be for. I quietly signaled to my sister. She brought out a cake and sang happy birthday. Once we received our check, my sister noticed that she had been charged for the birthday cake that was supposed to be a surprise for her. When I asked about it, they sent our rude, inattentive server to us who then told me that they don't do anything special for birthdays. When I told her that the young lady helping us has told us otherwise, she responded "Well, she's fourteen" and then proceeded to respond, "because it was for your sister, I assumed her husband would be taking care of the charge. My husband always pays". This wasn't even about having to pay for the cake. This was incredibly frustrating because they made it seem as if this were something they offered as an establishment, charged my sister (who didn't even ask for the cake to begin with), and proceeded to insult us. If they would have said they didn't offer anything in particular for birthdays and given me the option to decide, and charge ME, that's one thing. The server just continued to argue with me in front of all of the other guests and be incredibly rude. She finally took the charge off of my sister's account, but not until she insulted us multiple times in front of customers making us seem cheap, as if we hadn't spent hundreds of dollars to dine there this evening. Such an unfortunate experience as we drove an HOUR to dine at their...
Read moreThe Olde Town Hall Restaurant & Pub tries to do too much. They have a rather extensive menu that runs from Chicken wings to Shrimp & Grits; from a BLT to stuffed Meatloaf. Picky eaters have plenty of choices. We had Fried Green Tomatoes and Mozzarella sticks to start. Mozzarella sticks were good and exactly what you expect. The Fried Green Tomatoes were very good, they are served over grits and with some brown gravy. It is a different take than most Lowcountry versions. It will not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it. I also think that as the base for the Shrimp & Grits, that will make for a nice dish to try. For Entrees the Cranberry Fields salad was a nice choice with fresh greens and dried cranberries. The fish and chips says cod on the menu. However, the fish served was not cod. Further it was corn breaded and fried like catfish. If you want a traditional fish and chips, this is not your choice. I will say that the flavor was good, but it would not have been my choice if I had realized it was to be a cornbread breading. Next was the BLT. This was a shambolic imitation of this classic sandwich. The bacon was under-cooked and tough. The wait staff did not understand why we wanted cripsy bacon, even though the menu clearly says "Crispy Hickory smoked, thick sliced bacon..." They offered to bring some crispy bacon to the table, but made it seem like it was a big imposition. By the time they offered "their fix", the kids were too tired. Nothing further from the staff other than here is your check. Should have offered to fix a new fresh sandwich to match the menu and make it to go, or take it off the bill. Both were refused. I gave the service * because the hostess was helping with drinks and the kitchen had a staff member running plated. So there was a nice bit of teamwork there. My overall impression is that there is a lot of potential in the Olde Town Hall, but someone else will...
