I am a resident here in Robinson, but I used to live in a city in Kentucky where we had three Mandarin restaurants, one a buffet and the other two a buffet/kitchen ordeal. So I can say I've had food closer to authentic Mandarin dishes compared to what Yen Ching serves. I honestly don't know how people say it's the best Chinese they ever had. I shouldn't have to come home and cook my own seasoned chicken because they only put a small scattering of bland probably boiled chicken in my lo mein. I don't actually mind their noodles despite being sweet, but it's so overly greasy I almost think they just boil oily noodles. Fried noodles do not have this consistency. The only thing I've ever fully enjoyed at this place was their egg rolls when they're freshly made. Their chicken fried rice is usually overly greasy and salty with little flavor; I almost think I'm gonna get acne just from touching it.
Any other meal is slathered in sweet sauce, even the spicy stuff. No meal has been savory, only greasy, salty, or overly sweet. I order szechuan chicken and got something that tasted like weird ketchup and I couldn't even finish it. Their white rice is always overly sticky and seems impossible to eat because it's practically glued together. Their General Tso's is overwhelmingly sweet, typically over breaded, and not even a hint of spice or savor. Their soups are basically broth with vegetables that taste straight out of a can.
Luckily every time I've gone their service has been very friendly with me, but usually they would only come check up on me maybe once or twice during the entire meal. Given I'm not super social, it doesn't bother so much unless I'm ready to check out, which is usually pretty quickly given the meal almost gives me cavities with the amount of sugar in it. I almost have to drench most of my food in soy sauce to get any flavour because it's so overly bland, and most meals are very lacking in ingredients -meat and vegetables both- despite their huge portions.
For the price they charge for one single person, I could easily feed four the exact thing and it taste three times better. Never should I have to get ingredients from my own kitchen to add to something a cook probably pulled from a freezer and thawed out to hot just so I can get close to enjoying it. Nor should I have to practically wash my face in Dawn just to get rid of all the grease the meals are saturated in. If this is your only experience with Mandarin food, I honestly don't know how you enjoyed it. But for those who have had better Mandarin and claim this is better, you must honestly be lacking in taste buds, because this honestly in my list of worst Chinese restaurants I've been too. Half the time I order their noodles and add some precooked stuff from the kitchen just so I don't have to cook the lo...
Read moreI usual get vegetable egg rolls and white rice. I don't eat a lot of Chinese food but it's usually good. The last time I ordered it was takeout and the food wasn't ready until near closing time. When I got home we found the egg rolls looked different. We cut one open and it looked like it had meat in it. I called and verified that it was not what we had intended to order. These had pork in them. They said they couldn't do anything about it that night since the kitchen was closed now. They didn't seem like they cared too much and said I could call the following day. I had rice for dinner that night and the meat eaters had extra egg rolls. We...
Read moreWonderful! Great food for great price! Can't beat their lunch prices. Food is always great! It comes out hot and fresh every time! Crab rangoons, egg rolls, egg drop soup are so good! It's not a big place, so you might have to wait a few minutes, but it is definitely worth any wait. Love that they will adjust the spice level if you don't like a dish to be spicy! We normally eat here at lunch time, but the evening menu is also great. It costs more, but the portions are also larger. It is usually enough for two people. You can order from the evening...
