We came here for a wedding dinner reception for 10 people and we’re disappointed overall for many reasons.
Food: The overall quality of food was just “ok” nothing exceptional, but disappointing overall for the price paid ($30-40 per plate) and quantity received. A couple guests who ordered ravioli noted the portion sizes were too small and tasted no different than store bought ravioli (nothing exceptional). The ravioli size portion is about 6-7 ravioli and one guest had to order a second meal. One guest said the halibut was not palatable. Another guest noted the steak frites with chimichurri sauce had only green sprinkles of it. The portions of her steak were unsatisfactorily cooked rare and when it got recooked, one slice of steak was missing. The guest noted the steak was just “meh”. The lobster Mac and cheese was disappointing in the sauce was very running, did not taste exceptional, contained few lobster pieces, and used large awkward pasta corkscrew shape. My dish, haddock with stuffed crab was very small (5 bites) and plain. It was nothing special for sauce, rice, and steamed asparagus. Fish portion is about half the size you would expect in a nice restraint with taste you would could get in a fast casual. I noticed a paucity of good comments that night, whereas the night before in a better and less pricy restaurant all the guests were raving about their food and remarked how that was a good choice. Let that sink in. Overall, we were disappointed for quality and quantity for the high price we had to pay on a special occasion.
Service: The waiter was good initially in asking multiple times if we needed a child high chair and asking guests for drinks/water. For 10 people, we only got 8 pieces of bread and majority of guests wanted more. The waiter was not cognizant of lack of bread and we had to ask waiter three times for more bread and each time we only got 4 pieces. Half of plates came, then we had to to wait about 4-5 minutes before the second half plates came. Some plates became lukewarm. A couple of guests noticed this and were dismayed. The worst part of service was after having a large dinner party of 10 and a $450 bill, the waiter goes to guest of honor paying for dinner with electronic card reader instead of a private paper receipt. The waiter then asks for a tip of 20% which the guest of honor did not voluntarily commit, as waiter pressed button for guest of honor in front on the other patrons “this is the amount you tip”. The guest felt disrespected and put in very awkward position as we had not fully discussed who was paying tip. Overall, the professionalism of service was lacking.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is good, next to water, rustic and relaxed. Most of guests all remarked good comments about it and some wanted to enjoy the beautiful...
Read more4 of us had dinner last week. We live here in Rockland. Have read many favorable reviews but unfortunately we do not have one as favorable. The restaurant interior and art work on the walls obviously a pleasure. Food and presentation was not. Jace, our waiter was well mannered and helpful. The bread basket came out while we sipped on our cocktails. It was the sadness display of bread and quality I've seen since a high-school lunch. 4 soft small balls of bread with just one little container of butter to share with 4 people. Truly a joke. My stuffed Haddock with asparagus and rice was edible but not as special as you would expect for the price. Fish a tad under cooked and mushy, asparagus buried under the fish, rice piled up along the side of the bowl that showed little attention or care. A competent chef would not have allowed that to leave the kitchen. Also the dish was luke warm. Our other guests ordered the steak and sweet potato fries. Again adequate but not worthy of the reviews and the price. Small portions with little attention to presentation. Hot cast iron skillet with small portion of fried potatoes. Brown meat and over cooked fries on a black skillet. In this situation a garnish is needed to give it color and to also show the kitchen staff cares about thier work. It appears to me that the restaurant, in its effort to control it overhead may be focusing on the wrong things. Nice and plentiful bread baskets and individual butter containers could make a difference and sometimes sets the mood. Presentation and garnishing on the main dishes , makes a huge difference. Bringing the final bill on a big electronic tablet for all to see and putting the tip bar inches away from the face of the person picking up the tab is TACKY at best !!! The potential at the Causeway is there but needs staff that truly understands the restaurant bissiness and customer service that brings back repeat customers. Thank you for the opportunity to write my...
Read moreOn our way to Canada we had the great fortune of discovering an amazing BnB called The Craignair Inn which has a restaurant, The Causeway, featuring a variety of vegan options. These aren’t just any vegan options either, they’re delightful vegan seafood dishes curated and conceived of by the proprietor, Greg.
Pictured are the vegan crab cakes and vegan lobster roll, paired with wild mushroom tacos and of course a pale ale from The Maine Brewing Company. “Do the Right Thing” is the Maine Brewing Company’s motto, and Greg and Lauren are 110% living up to those words.
The Craignair Inn itself is delightful and charming, and the restaurant, with inside and outside dining options during the summer, could not offer a better view of Clark Cove and the Maine Coast. Overall, we cannot say enough good things about this restaurant and its attached BnB. It’s hard to find vegan fine dining options on the road in America in 2022, sadly. That especially applies to vegan seafood, which, ask any chef, is the hardest animal-based food to recreate as a plant-based option.
If you find yourself vacationing in Maine, plan to make a stop in Spruce Head and stay for a night or a month at The Craignair Inn. We certainly wish we’d had more time to enjoy this gorgeous spot.
