I need to start by acknowledging that I had someone help me make a reservation for an out of town wedding dinner. I had never been here before nor heard of it and I travel to San Antonio every Spring.
There were 3 set menus which I am not a HUGE fan of since there were several folks with special dietary needs. We were able to get permission to allow for some vegetarian options but make sure to ask for beans not made with lard if you need.
We got charged the full $28 a plate even for small children. Something to keep in mind. I almost went to the front and ordered TO GO food for the kids but the manager didn't like that loop hole.
The manager was very rude. We were a pretty laid back group and all the kids were very behaved. When I asked for chips and dip after being there half an hour with no drinks he snapped back at me and stated signs are EVERYWHERE and you should have seen them. They do not serve chips and dip for free. It would be $1.99 per bowl of chips. The bowl was very small but my guests were starving at this point. I had a separate bill just for chips. I paid way too much for chips that are usually FREE at any other mexican food restaurant.
I think the food was OK. The tacos were different but they were good. The enchilada plate....MEH. Mostly shredded chicken and my daughters had a piece of bone in it so I let her have my plate. The kids loved the beans and rice.
Things I liked: The outside is beautiful. I would come back with a small group and have drinks and listen to music. Our waiter was sweet. He came and shared some cake with us after we cut it. Bathroom was clean which is something I always look out...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe haven't been to this place in quite a while, and compared to some of the other Mexican restaurants that we have been to recently, Viola's was pretty good. The menu seems to have a whole lot more selections on it than it used to have. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to get. I ended up ordering the Tex-Mex Enchiladas with 1 chicken and 2 beef enchiladas. By the time I finally finished my plate I felt like my stomach was going to burst!! They definitely do not hold back on the portion sizes!! My wife ordered the Taquitos del Pueblo and she seemed to enjoy it a lot too.
The only drawback was that I didn't see any enchiladas that came with chicken or beef FAJITA meat inside. NOBODY that I have found yet in San Antonio does that and I can't understand why. So our server Danielle told me that if I got the Tex-Mex Enchiladas and paid the xtra $2 I could get them with beef or chicken in them. I asked her if it was fajita meat and she said yes, but when I started to eat them I discovered that it wasn't fajita meat at all. The one chicken enchilada was great, but the beef "fajita" meat was actually ground beef. I was disappointed, but didn't feel like complaining about it, so I just ate them anyway.
Viola's has a VERY GOOD potential to be my absolute favorite Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio if they could only find a way to serve Enchiladas that have beef and/or chicken FAJITA meat in them.
Lots of Mexican Restaurants over in the Houston area do that and they are DEE-STANKIN-LISHUS!!! One of them was Los Cucos, and I'm going to go on their website and request that they open some restaurants over here in San Antonio to show everyone here how it's...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLast time me and my family visited we were sat inside and we were swatting away flys during our entire meal. Following this experience we took a while to return back. Finally decided we would go back, we stood at the entrance for a long while before we had to ask the lady to be seated. When we got seated outside as we requested, we got a table by the fan to try to keep away flys and such. However throughout our entire meal we were attacked by bees. Could not enjoy our meals because we had multiple bees swarming us. We did not order anything particularly sweet just 2 enchilada plates with 3 waters to drink. There was TRASH was thrown all around the play area. Namely the red tinted CHEMICAL sprays used for the tables, just left by the play scape for potential children to get ahold of. As well as cups with soda and trash thrown around. Its no wonder why there is an abundance of flys and and bees here. Its filthy! I will say the lady serving us was very kind and our food came out very fast, taste wise the stale enchiladas weren't what we were expecting. We overheard some of the workers giggling about how bad the bees have been but none of them wanted to clean out the park area. 20 minutes from being seated we asked for togo boxes since we could not complete the meal we purchased in peace. We could not even box our meals up with out the bees once again attaching us. This will be our last time coming back. So sad to see this beautiful establishment with typically delicious food and beautiful atmosphere...
