Chepo's Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in San Marcos

Great Food, Great Atmosphere!!! Still Great, Migas are still the best in town... 2/24/24 Thie changed on 11/12/2024. My mom and I went here for lunch/Breakfast we put out order in and it took way longer than usual but we had a long break. I ordered an omelette which was good. My mom ordered the Chepo's Burger, she asked the girl for mayonnaise instead of mustard. When the burger came out my mom took a bite and she said that's mustard, she takes small bites so 2 of her bites is like a normal person's bite lol. She informed the waitress that she asked for mayonnaise not mustard. Instead of apologizing and asking to remake it, she brought out a small bowl of mayo. She asked if they could just redo the bun and she would add the mayo to that. The waitress said okay about 5 minutes later we never saw her, the place was dead when we ordered but more people were coming in. The burger started to get cold. My mom said nevermind it's taking to long and our long lunch break is getting shorter and shorter. She went to pay for the food told the cashier I didn't eat the burger because they messed it up and she said we'll pay half. She told her No you made it wrong and I took 2 small bites. She wasn't happy, neither were we, they were never like this and they are always busy. I don't know why they are...

Several friends have told me that Chepo's was "so good" and one of thier favorite places in San Marcos. Following my visit today, I've determined that my friends must be weirdos that doesnt know what Mexican food should taste like. Chepo's isn't it! First and foremost - for a Mexican food restaurant to be good, it must have good salsa. Chepo's salsa tastes like watery tomato sauce. Not good... Chips were stale and are the cheap restaurant supply variety. I got the beef fajita plate. The meal came with about 6 small pieces of blackened and overly charred meat barely enough to make one taco. Lucky I also got about 4 slivers of grilled onion that I could add to the one taco and that really helped me swallow. Besides being burnt and so tough I had difficulty chewing, it just didn't taste good. Almost no seasoning and very bland.

The refried beans were similar in that they were very bland with no discernible seasonings other than lard.

The rice was surprisingly good however and it was kind of unique. Unfortunately, I'm not a big rice lover and it was nowhere near enough to make up for the rest of the food.

I used to eat here at least 2x per week and I usually order the same thing every single time and almost every time there is never mayonnaise on my burger even though I asked at the onset. I have to ask for extra which they provide in a separate bowl. The cook seems to refuse to put it on the burger even after requesting it over and over. I then find out that they charge for the extra mayo. I also found out that they were going to be charging me for my take out box. Now this could all be overlooked...yes they had a new waitress who didn't seem to know how to fill up glasses with water, and all of the above--and I could accept and move on, but when I think of the incidents over the last year it was just the last straw. In fact it was fairly recent that I took my staff to eat and the lady at the register questioned me if I had paid my bill from the day before!!! I mean, she says this in front of my team. I then pull it up on my bank's app showing payment and there is no apology or anything. Oh well, there are other...
