Friday night we ventured to Riverdale Tavern for dinner. For a small town restaurant, the menu is fairly extensive. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted. We started with chips and nacho cheese, then we both got cod dinners and shared a side of onion rings. The cod fillets were enormous!! I definitely did not need two. They were perfectly cooked and had a wonderful tempura batter. 10/10. (They were quite greasy, but they're deep fried so what did I expect?) The onion rings also had the tempura batter and were very good. The coleslaw was good and I'm usually not a big fan of coleslaw. The fries were just frozen fries from a bag. Not homemade, no seasoning, just blah. Not bad, just not great. I guess I was expecting something better in the chips and cheese, but it tasted like gas station nachos. They were okay and not expensive, just not great. (They would be a great drunk snack though. Lol) The only issue I had with the atmosphere was that it was quite cold in the restaurant. I was glad I was wearing a heated vest, otherwise I would have been miserable. The bathroom was very clean which is always appreciated. All the food came out quickly and was served piping hot. Overall, the service was great, the prices are very reasonable, the portions are VERY generous and most of the food was above average. This was not our first time here and probably won't be the last. I would go more often if it...
Read moreThis place has been around for over a century. It's changed hands a few times over the years but always kept within the same family since it was built in 1917. It has that old-time feel when you walk into the main entrance and if you take time to look at some of the decor hanging on the walls, It gives you some of that nostalgic feeling of the early years. The place could definitely use some updating and remodeling as over the years it's taking a toll due to the age of the establishment. Obviously it would take a fair amount of money to do so. This Tavern is part of History in Gratiot County and would be awesome if they would spend the money to do so and keep it around for many many more years. That all in itself is not going to keep the doors open longer but it could very well draw more business. And under the right management decisions and advertisement make this place more awesome and profitable. Perhaps even live bands, or stand up comedy periodically. If you've never been there, try it out I definitely...
Read moreI stumbled in there from a long a weary day on the bike trail, was only really looking to get some water for the evening. Just getting off the handcycle by the front door and a lady asked me if I was ok , cuz I was stretching and groaning etc....she didn't see my prosthetic leg. I joked that one always is givin me trouble. turns out it was the owner - Sandy- just an angel. she had me park around the side walked thru the kitchen, had my water bottles rinsed out and filled, and well I stayed for one of the best fish dinners ever. As they were busy, I shared my table with a wonderful couple and we had a great conversation, about everything. Just nice people, and a great place. Sandy herself made sure I was taken care of. If you're ever near there I HIGHLY RECOMMEND STOPPING IN.... YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!! Of course Sandy made me promise that I will always stop in when i'm on the trail-- won't have to twist my arm too hard for that. Sandy made a tough day much better - just being...
