We've been there twice, so perhaps after more visits, our review may change to more (or fewer) stars. We felt the quality of the food was quite good, but communication could be a LOT better, both in person and on their website and voicemail.
On our first visit, I had a curried chicken salad wrap - made with lots of lettuce and curried mayo, so I was surprised when waiting an unusually long time for it (with no one else waiting for food ahead of me), I discovered the delay was because it was being warmed up. It never occurred to me to heat up a wrap with ingredients that are usually served cold. I'm not adverse to that, but it was puzzling, and the result was a combination of both warm and cold filling. It's like swimming in a spring-fed pond - cold blast, warm area, cold blast, etc. There's no cheese that needs to be melted either. I would suggest that warming be offered as optional. They had a packaged gluten-free brownie that was pretty good. They have a good drink selection too.
For the second visit, I saw online that we could order in advance. Yea! For the Sheffield location, the website says to order by 2:30 pm 'cause they close at 3:00. I spent some time getting all the details fine-tuned for our order and pressed send at 2:20, and NOPE, it was rejected. I tried again, and it was still not accepted. My clock was right. Maybe they didn't change over their computer clocks after the last time change? So, we showed up to order in person. I didn't hurry, 'cause when I called to ask about the online ordering (and to order over the phone instead), I got a voicemail for the Sheffield location saying they close at FOUR pm. Great, I have even more time. Well, no, we didn't. The sign at the entrance said they close at 3:00. We arrived at about 2:30 and ordered two items. My tuna sandwich was fine, (I substituted cheddar cheese for the beets which is a substitution offered online, but the amount of cheddar was one slice. I like beets, I like tuna, but not together, so this alternative seemed good, but was skimpy. My husbands' Shay's Rebellion sandwich was to include sprouts. When he got it, besides being pretty meager overall, there were no sprouts. He took it back inside and asked, "Shouldn't this have sprouts?" The answer was, "We don't have sprouts." "But doesn't it come with them?" "We don't have sprouts." They didn't say, "We're out of sprouts," or "I'm sorry, we don't have any more sprouts left," implying they should - they said it like, NO, we're not supposed to have them and you're being odd to ask. There was also no "I'm so sorry about that." Just a gruff response as if my husband was silly to be asking. No apology which is so easy to say.
If they're out of something, the staff should let the cashier know so that he/she can say, "I'm sorry, we don't have sprouts at the moment. We can substitute lettuce or arugula for you, or, would like to order something else...?" Better communication all around would improve this place ten-fold. And, smiles too. The cashiers were nice (one quite shy, but that's okay), but smiles would go a long way in smoothing over some of...
Read more$5.95 for a piece of cold fried chicken. Ouch. Another $3.00. for a sticky bun? My total for lunch, including salad below, was $38.00! Expect to spend more than you expect at this cafe. I don't know what has happened to the pricing at Marketplace. The cashier never seems very happy. Yellow jackets swarming outside in the seating area. I was starving as I had just hiked for over 3 hours nearby on the AT. The 14.99 chicken on lettuce, two canned drinks (Diet Coke and Spindrift) plus the above sticky bun and 1 piece of fried chicken and my total for the meal was I have stopped at the Marketplace Kitchen twice in the last week. I ordered a Mexicali sandwich and had them make it into a bowl. The sandwich is 11.99, fair enough, but the 14.99 for the bowl is a bit steep considering they just put the chicken with melted cheese on some iceberg lettuce in a paper bowl and throw in some guacamole and spicy mayo....
Read moreI Go here with my fellow employees every now and then, I also understand that my parents have made this the "go to" spot for breakfast, I think the food is good, and the staff is friendly but I cannot get over the prices!!!! I spent 16 dollars for 2 bowls of scrambled eggs (looked like one egg per bowl) (does not make fried eggs here) and a single cup of coffee!!! what should have been a 9 dollar at most charge but way marked up, prices are ugly expensive but hey if you have the money to blow on overpriced food go for it! I appreciate that they throw local events but please for god sakes tone down the price of your food!!! good way to loose business. I also feel that they need music or something. The atmosphere is a bit stale. But like I said before this is not a bad resturaunt, everything seems farm to table healthy. Only bad is the price and the fact that you need to clear...
