This was not a great dining experience. My boyfriend and I are up here visiting and wanted to get lunch/dinner. Found this restaurant online. Food looked great and reviews were good, too.
We arrived sometime around 2:45p, were greeted by the hostess and were told it would be a 40 minute wait for outside seating. We put our name down and provided our phone number to be texted when a table is available. We then waited upstairs and were called down verbally by the hostess.
We sat at our lovely table that was riverside at 3:30p. We then waited an additional 10 minutes and were not greeted once by any server. I then went to the hostess stand and notified them that we still haven’t had a server come by. She informed me the young girl next to me was on her way to our table.
She comes by and says, “I’m sorry, I’ve been running around like crazy, I apologize, what can I get for you?”Considering how long it took for us to be seated and receive service, we instantly put our food order in. I attempt to order a Margherita pizza and am quickly told there is a 20 minute hold on all pizzas. I order a salad instead and then my boyfriend orders a sandwich with fries and he is informed their fryer is not working so they are unable to do fries as a side at this time. We order a mojito, Jack & Coke, and the Tapoco Chips as well.
She brings our drinks a while later and then a young man brings our appetizer another while later and apologizes to us because he noticed we’ve been seated for a while waiting for service, that they pride themselves on customer satisfaction, and that they’re struggling to keep the place afloat.
He then leaves and our server is never to be seen at our table again. She walked past our table countless times. We observed her checking on her other tables and bringing drinks and food. We also see numerous parties getting fresh pizzas placed at their tables.
After we finished our appetizer, she shouts from the next table over, “Everything all good?” We nod our head in silence. She continues to walk past our table, not checking in on us. Finally, she comes by around 4:10p and asks if we need anything.
I inform her we are cancelling our food order and we’d like the tab. She says, “Okay, no problem.” Comes back with the tab and says, “I did check on your food. It is actually ready if you guys still want to stay and eat, or we can box it up, unless you guys still don’t want it.” I reassure her that we would like to cancel the food.
As she is providing our tab, she then goes on to say, “Did I explain to you what’s going on in our kitchen today?” I respond, “No.” She states, “Our kitchen is not working properly and our kitchen staff are having to run upstairs to prepare orders so that’s why it’s taking a long time.”
We pay our tab and leave at 4:16p, $48 later and all we received was 2 beverages and a mediocre appetizer, at best, and the worst service we have experienced in this area.
Could’ve been an off day for the staff but if explained kindly in the beginning we may have been more understanding. Also, keep in mind this was on a Wednesday afternoon, so not comparable to a busy Saturday evening.
Quite unfortunate to have had this experience since the view and restaurant was beautiful.
Will not be recommending this place to any of our...
Read moreWe tried this place yet again after many poor service experiences. The food is always good, service is consistently poor. This time we made dinner reservations at 5:00pm in hopes that it would not take the usual 3 hours. We still had to wait 15 minutes with a 5:00pm reservation, but no big deal the grounds are beautiful. Our whole party arrived we were sat, we ordered and our food and drinks weren’t terribly slow as in the past. Then the rain came forcing us inside just as our food arrived. Of course, no one can control the weather so we grabbed our food and drinks, with no offer of help from the staff to bring it inside. We were told to grab tables inside so we could eat our meal. We finally got our party situated and sat at another table. I literally went to take my first bite after the whole ordeal and a lady with short dark hair approached me very pointedly. She very rudely informed me that our party needed to move to 6 seats (not even close to the amount of people in the party) at the bar. Her reason was that other people had reservations. I informed her that we had reservations also. She then snapped back “yeah but you were at an outside table and then you moved inside” as if that made our reservations void. (Note, we did not request outdoor seating, we were sat there by the staff and it was pouring rain) She insisted we pick up all our food and drinks a SECOND time and sit/stand at the bar. No offer to help us move the second time, no apology for our inconvenience or not having enough seats! So, we all get our food/drinks and move to the bar. Some were able to sit but half the party had no seats!!! As I was standing there scarfing down my dinner I had a glorious view of two unoccupied tables under cover from the rain that remained empty while I finished my meal. Half of our party boxed up their food and waited in the upstairs gift shop while the other half quickly ate. Not once did anyone help us move our dinner (they had TWO opportunities), not once were we offered an apology. I understand no one can control the weather but when you work in the service/hospitality industry you should never make a paying customer feel unwanted and in the way. I was shocked. After everyone paid their checks (again, an offer to comp some meals should have been in order since some of us had no place to eat our meal) my husband did make a complaint and the general manager, who was another guy, did try to make it right by offering a gift card. I’m not sure we will be back to use the gift and I am pretty sure we will never bring our guests there after the unnecessarily rude encounter with the lady. It was...
Read moreFirst, the experience at the Tavern is wonderful. If you can, I highly recommend eating out on the patio. The atmosphere is top notch. The service was also excellent.
However, the food sometimes leaves something to be desired. I had Tracy's Pasta, trout nuggets, mashed potatoes, and superfood slaw. The trout nuggets and superfood slaw were excellent. The mashed potatoes were ok, but just a bit watery which was odd. The taste was good though. Tracy's Pasta was a big offense however. It came in a bowl, and immediately I could tell it was going to be bad. It was plainly cooked cavatappi sitting in a bowl, with a spoonful of premade sauce on top, lightly covered in cheese. There was no evidence of seasoning anywhere, and the pasta itself was sitting in it's own water that was supposed to be drained out. I make better pasta than this at home myself, and when I go out and order a $18 bowl of pasta, the minimum I expect at that price point is as good as I personally can make. I ended up "rescuing" the pasta by adding a lot of salt and pepper, and dumping powdered parmesan cheese into the dish to absorb some of the pasta water. It still wasn't great but it added flavor and it was slightly better.
The worst part is that this is ridiculously easy to fix. Rather than using cavatappi, use rotini/fusilini. Cavatappi does not drain very well because of how it's shaped. That fixes the biggest offender which is the water at the bottom of the bowl. Then for the sauce, add some salt, pepper, oregano, maybe parsley, maybe garlic, etc. Add a little extra cheese than the sprinkling on top. That would be an easy to make, delicious pasta with or without meat. Alternatively, leave out the extra salt and pepper and add the other spices, then allow the customer to add as needed. Regardless, the pasta was not worth $5, let alone $18, and when our bill was over $100 for lunch itself, I...
