This place is now called Tega Cay Tavern, and I understand the place has new owners. I have been coming here once or twice a year for many years whenever I visit relatives in the area.
When patronizing an establishment of this nature, one should always order one of the simpler meals, things like hamburgers. You don't want to make a mistake and pay dearly for a first-class meal that is really second rate. So I ordered nachos. How can anyone mess up such a simple dish. Well, they managed to do so, and not because of whomever was in the kitchen. The ingredients that they use are basically going to be the same regardless of who the chef is (excuse me, cook). Really, how can anyone mess up such a simple thing.
Let me explain.
Why do they put all that cheap cheese on top. Burnt ground beef is not chilly. And what happened to the standard serving of veggies that are supposed to be included, things like black beans, jalapenos, lettuce, olives, grilled corn, cilantro, et cetera? Also, cheap tomato sauce and sour cream are no replacement for quality ingredients of tats nature. And needless to add, they did not provide guacamole, pico de gallo, salsa verde, queso dip, mango salsa or anything else of that nature. I knew it was going to be a very poor quality meal when I saw all that melted cheese on top. I don't give it a one star because I reserve those for places like McDonald's. However, if what you want to do is drink beer and talk to friends, go ahead, patronize them. But if you want a decent meal,...
Read moreI visited for the first time on a random Tuesday. There was plenty of parking and a few groups having beers at the outdoor picnic tables.
The atmosphere inside is very informal (it is a Tavern, after all). I didn't see a hostess, so I sat myself at the bar.
Trivia was in full swing in the main dining area, and everyone playing seemed to be having a nice time; there were lots of smiling faces.
I asked a guy if anyone was sitting in the seat next to him. He told me it was all mine, for the price of his tab. We both laughed.
The bartender came right over and asked what she could get started for me. I ordered a porter and told the her I'd like to eat whatever meal she'd be most proud to serve a first-time guest. It turned out to be some steak tacos - Taco Tuesday. They were some of the best tacos I've had in years. I was seriously impressed.
The steak was cooked perfectly. The pico de gallo was fresh. The queso fresco was an authentic finishing touch. And, the fresh lime wedge added the requisite citrus. Perfecto!
Don't expect too much other than a good time, some good grub, and a decent beer selection. It's exactly what I was looking for, a laid-back beer and dinner.
What a great little local watering hole! I'll...
Read morewe came to 2020 tavern to have dinner with family and our dog. we sat outside and while we are sitting there fire ants are crawling up our legs biting us not to mention my dog who was walking all over the ant piles. we just moved to the concrete area and didn’t say any thing. we got our food and flies started swarming our table. usually i’m not the type to complain about bugs but this was a LOT of flys. i had a dead fly in my food. we once again didn’t mention this to the manager. we asked for mayonnaise and we’re eating it thinking huh this tastes like fish. my girlfriend checked the expiration date and it expired 7 months ago… so we ask our server if we could see the manger. he comes out and responds in the most vague and uncaring way when he should be extremely apologetic being that i have IBS and just ate 7 month expired mayo. this experience was one of the worst and we will...
