The Arsenal — Restaurant in South Carolina

A colleague and I jumped off the interstate to go to a different restaurant that turned out to be inside a gas station and we were turning around next to the Arsenal and frankly were underwhelmed by the exterior. There were cars there though and when looked up it had 4.6 stars so we decided to take a chance. This place could be the picture in the dictionary for divey, in a good way. The menu board is loaded with greasy spoon favorites and they had homemade candy for sale on the counter. You could get a bologna burger, vegetable soup and grilled cheese combo, and many more. I opted for the "world famous" hot dog. I got it with the homemade chili and slaw on top of mustard and onions. I wouldn't class it as world famous but it was a solid entry in the diner dog category. Who knows what is going on with restaurants these days...maybe it's because of the pandemic and they are cutting corners to save money. Some that used to be decent are bad now and our choices are already limited here in Gaffney. But, Arsenal is still serving great food at great prices. I had a chicken filet sandwich with lettuce/tomatoe/mayo and fries. The filet is as big as the bun (not the usual little "patty" you get at other places). This is a small, old-time burger dive that warmly reminds me of a million places I have been in, but not in a long time. Order your food, have low expectations, and eat without comparing your burger to your favorite burger place's burger. Same with the fries and o-rings. While eating, I looked around at the others dining here: slowly chewing; faraway stares; listening to the TV that sits too high on the wall.
