Not a meal - an experience… Absolutely Amazing! This is exactly what you'd expect the quintessential Maine Lobster Shack to be like. Not on a major road- They’re located at a real working lobster dock. The food is off the charts! Can’t get any fresher than this- You can see the lobster boats brining in their day’s catch from the tables out front. The menu is perfect- They really do a good job covering all of the bases for every palate. You will find something for just about everyone. My son who does not like Lobster (I’m not sure he’s really ours 😉 ) Had the Clam Chowder and Burger and raved about it. The burgers are not frozen pre-formed patties. The cook formed the burger and cooked it right on the outside grill in front of you. The Lobster Roll is over the top! just the right size and sweet and juicy as can be. They actually grill their corn – No soggy over cooked corn here. Don’t stop there! The blueberry bread pudding with ice cream was the perfect ending to the perfect meal. A large portion to be shared with a couple of eating utensils finished the job! We spent a good amount of time just “people watching” when we realized that a good part of the patrons were “Locals”. That’s great to see! This is not a tourist trap! The staff is top rate. They are all friendly and you can tell that they actually enjoy what they do. They went above and beyond to make sure that we we’re happy, satisfied customers. A word of advice: Get there early it does get busy! But then again there’s a...
Read moreSo my wife and I have been talking about visiting Maine for about the last ten years, specifically to find the “best” lobster rolls and we had three over three days in Portland, Wiscasset, and South Thomaston Island.
This review is for stop 3 in South Thomaston at McLoon’s. We did our best to have each lobster roll the same way, cold, with mayo, and melted butter on the side. This meal was eaten on Thursday, 9/4/2025.
This lobsta roll isn’t good. It also isn’t great …
THIS LOBSTA ROLL IS HANDS DOWN AMAZING, BORDERING ON PERFECT!!!
Now, by the time we visited McLoon’s, we had already eaten lobsta rolls at two other places and those were good and really good.
However, McLoon’s is on a totally different level. The bun is like a gift from the gods, and the lobster is sweet and succulent and perfectly cooked with the perfect amount of mayo and enough butter to satisfy any palate! It’s hard to emphasize how the right bread, which in this case was savory and buttery with a nice toasted crunch, makes a huge difference overall. This lobsta roll is an A+, without a doubt.
If you come to Maine, and can only get one lobsta roll, drive out of your way and come to McLoon’s!
And, as you can see from the pics, especially the photos of the harbor, which you can see from the outdoor tables and seats, the setting is unbelievable: the perfect complement to the...
Read moreThe atmosphere was cool. Quiet place right on the water, with no loud music (actually none at all) that can make it hard to talk at times. Ordering is easy and they called your name when your order is ready. Bring your own alcohol. Yes, it's ok to do this. They only have local soda and water to choose from, but you can byob! It's only outdoor seating so bring a jacket for the chilly days. The food: Sub par, but maybe my expectations were too high as we heard rave reviews. My wife and I ordered the crab roll and grilled clams. Make sure to eat the clams hot, right off the grill. The garlic butter sauce was good, but in all the food is over priced for the quantity and flavor profile that's to be expected from a shoreline seafood provider. The crab roll came with a pickle and small bag of packaged chips (Cape Cod brand...plain flavor). A bit disappointed with this when paying $25 for a sandwich. We ordered dessert as well. The whoopie pie. Again, nothing original. Product from an outside vendor. Delivered frozen to McLoons, then they simply take it out of the plastic packaging and put in on a plate. It was a nice outdoor atmosphere experience being on the shoreline, but that's about it. I would not revisit. There's too many other...
