Great brisket. Great food. Great little spot! I won't lie to you and say this is the best barbecue I've ever had because it's not, but this is a solid barbecue joint that will serve you some good meat, good beans, and good sauce. I didn't try the sausage but it looks amazing. I worked at an award winning barbeque in the southern United States in my early 20's so I have done my rounds with BBQ competitions and tried many top tier BBQ's.
This place here is solid. The baked beans have pulled pork in them and that is truly amazing! The Mac and cheese is average at best.
The only negatives I can give them is they like to put mustard in the sauce which is simply strange and unnecessary. If some weird people want mustard on their barbecue sandwich they can ask for it. I really hope they aren't putting any mustard in the rub. Luckily they do have regular normal real BBQ sauce without any weird ingredients but you do have to ask for the normal sauce or they will put mustard on your BBQ and ruin it. They must have run into this problem a lot because they warn you about the mustard when you buy the food. They also put pickles on the sandwiches which once again is against the norm for good BBQ and unnecessary if the food is top tier.
Quality, BBQ doesn't require any Gimmick ingredients in the sauce or on the sandwich. Many people do not like mustard or pickles So it's strange that you would put them on sandwiches by default, forcing people to ask you to remove them so they can have a normal barbecue sandwich. If you genuinely believe that most people like Pickles and mustard on their barbecue then stock those ingredients put them on the menu and let them ask for...
Read moreReally impressed with the food, service, and atmosphere at Lazy P! This is a great spot to pick-up or grab lunch if you're in Spring Lake or around the Lakeshore!
Food/Service: The best BBQ I've had in Michigan (and at a reasonable price!). The food came quickly and those running Lazy P were kind and considerate. They even shared some sausage they were smoking with us while we were chatting. Brisket was cooked well and had a great smoke line. There was good bark but it wasn't tough. Also not overly fatty as far as brisket is concerned. It was not overcooked or dry. Sauce was stellar as well. My friend got a pulled pork sandwich the size of his face with pit beans that looked amazing! Corn bread was good, but the meats seemed like they were the star of the show here (which I prefer).
Atmosphere: The inside is a little crowded, but it was a cool oasis on a hot day! It was also well kept and very clean. Even with the small seating space, it made the experience feel more authentic - like this was a place that was about BBQ first...
*Brisket: 10/10 (best around) *Pulled pork: 8/10 (satisfactory; the pork sometimes has an odd taste that I cannot describe.) *Smoked turkey: 9/10 (best around; juicy, great smoke penetration.) *Sausage: 7/10 (good snap, good fat content, however slightly overseasoned) *Mac: 5/10 (bland, basic macaroni and cheese. Tastes like noodles and Velveeta.) *Slaw: 7/10 (great flavor, but questionable freshness as several times the slaw was pretty watery and the cabbage was limp) *Beans: 5/10 (inconsistent, sometimes they're thick and soft, other times they are firm and a little watery) *Cornbread: 5/10 (nothing to write home about. Seems dry and bland. Although, I prefer a sweeter cornbread so my opinion may be biased.) Staff are very friendly and all in all its a pretty good...
