We live in SF, but we try to come out to Big J's as often as we can. We came in tonight a little before 6 and it was surprisingly not busy. We were sat and got our menus and water fairly quickly, but then we were left sitting for over 10 minutes waiting to order. The waitress looked at us numerous times, but continued to bus tables, set up customers that walked in after us and even take their orders before us. They were getting ready for a 20 top. I understand that entirely, but to ignore your other customers and tables isn't okay. Eventually the waitress went to talk to another waitress and because she saw she was busy, she turned to us and asked if we were ready now. No apology for the wait and it felt like we were the last thing on her mind and the least important. I ordered a BBQ chicken salad with no cheese and no croutons as I'm gluten intolerant. When she brought out the salad, it had croutons and their croutons aren't just pieces you can pick off, they were crumbled on top. I basically removed the majority of my chicken that had the crumbles on it and ate the salad. I didn't want to wait longer for a new salad as we had already waited quite some time and had somewhere to be. My husband had a brisket sandwich with fries which he enjoyed, but the portion of fries seemed small. I'm not sure when we will be back after this kind of service and not being more careful about...

I had ordered pork nachos with a hazy IPA. 🍻 They make their own chips and top it with beer cheese (SO GOOD!!!), red onion, jalapeño, and then you get a choice of smoked chicken, pork, or brisket. I was offered salsa and tried it that way. It was good but preferred it much more drizzled with their bbq sauce, and even better with their spicy BBQ sauce which they had in the back (small kick-- nothing crazy). The flavors are wonderful on their own but something about the bbq sauce brought it to the next level for me. My husband helped eat some of this and we still have half of the nachos left. A couple next to us told us it's worth it to take the leftovers home and throw the nachos in the airfryer. Yum! Going to give that a try.
My husband ordered the two meat combo with brisket and pork. You get the choice of brisket, pork, smoked wings, smoked chicken--add grilled shrimp 6.99. It came with cornbread and two sides so he ordered the garlic mashed potatoes and french fries. He loved it all and mentioned how great the potatos were. He also has enough left over for lunch.
Delicious. Generous portions. Wonderful service. This was our second time heading out here and we will be back...

My niece recently got married. And through the confusion of switching the wedding hall into a reception hall, it was noticed that the caterers were not there. The caterers never did show. With some stressful moments, a friend of the wedding party made one phone call to Big J's Road House in Harrisburg. "What do you need? How many people?" and then "We'll be there in 45 minutes." From Harrisburg to Downtown Sioux Falls, with amazing food in tow. They literally saved a wedding.
Being from Nashville, I'm surrounded by lots of amazing BBQ places. But if Big J's Road House were here, I would be there so often they would know me by name. I could probably eat my weight in their cornbread muffins and pulled pork. These cornbread muffins were so moist yet crumbly. The tops had a lovely caramelized crunch to it. It was literally one of my favorite things I've ever eaten. And you cannot go wrong with their pulled pork. Meaty and tender and flavorful.
It's one thing to save the day. It's another thing to save the day with REALLY AMAZING FOOD! I cannot wait to go back to South Dakota and visit the Harrisburg location and give them all my money and try all the things on the menu!
A restaurant is really only as good as it's people. And these are the...
