Bortell's Fisheries — Restaurant in Summit Township

Highly overrated. WARNING they only accept cash/check. For the fried fish the batter/breading was blah. No seasoning. Not crispy. So light you could hardly tell it was battered or breaded so it was dry. Smoked fish was good not exceptional. Fresh fish they only had pieces — no filets and it was still early. Portion sizes small for price. Prices were unreasonably high. If I may suggest, think of your customers waiting in hour long lines outside. A menu with pricing should be available outside with up to date sell outs and pricing so you can decide if it’s worth waiting in the long line. Provide big fans or a roof or cover for shade. I saw some older folks about collapse while waiting in the heat. It’s wonderful to have a fresh fishery available but you can do much better. Think outside of your everyday box or wait in line yourself to understand how you can do better. Provide homemade tartar sauce not the little packaged stuff. Change up the batter and add some seasoning. Service was friendly. Keepers in Ludington was better. Price...

The fish is fresh and prepared to your liking. In addition to the fish, there are French fries and Cole slaw, that I’m aware of. It is almost always very busy and standing in some length of line is a must. It is open from May to October so you have to make sure to enjoy it while you can! Off to the side, they have a very nice grassy snd shady area to enjoy their delicious fish with several picnic table.

A bonus to their location in an off-the-beaten-path rural area between Pentwater and Ludington is that, down the street about a quarter-mile away, Summit Township has a public park on Lake Michigan with tennis/pickleball court, baseball field, picnic area with Punic tables, bathrooms, special occasion building, and a quiet Lake Michigan Beach!

Bortell's has been around forever, but they still have the best, freshest, tastiest fish you can find. You gotta love a fish place with a line out the door at 5:30 on a Thursday -- you know that their food doesn't sit around languishing in its tray waiting for customers and getting old. This fish is hopping out the door at a wicked pace, and the line really moves! The employees know their stuff: the service was fast and efficient. The dinner basket has 1/2 lb fish of your choice (and there are lots of choices) + crispy, delicious fries and a nice vinegar-y coleslaw. Always good.
