What a unique experience! We drove from Sunriver, Oregon. It was an hour and 15 minutes away! Great roads all the way though. Be careful with the Google directions once you are ready to turn into their parking lot. Don't turn until you actually see the Cowboy Dinner Tree sign on the right. Otherwise, you will have to wind your way through their little neighborhood.
The food was good. Huge portions! But we had a small table and the food came out kind of fast and overwhelmed it. We started asking for the "to go" bags mid way through the dinner just to make room on the table. Not a complaint, just telling it like it happened.
It is a set menu: Steak or Chicken. The steak is the size of a small roast and the chicken is a WHOLE chicken. This is accompanied by a huge baked potato, soup, beans, salad, and 8 rolls. Dessert was a choice of strawberry/Huckleberry shortcake and a custard pie. If you eat all that, your name should go into a record book somewhere!
Also, there is no alcohol on the premises. They don't serve it and you can't bring it. And it's cash only! $50 a person and you must order when you call in for reservations a couple months in advance.
At this time of year, they had a bit of a fly problem. But they had insect fans on all the tables and that quickly became a non issue.
The decor is what we would call a more rustic Cracker Barrel. The original CB, not the newly scrubbed Denny's version. Very cool decor! We were picking out stuff we remember from our grandparents houses and barns. Memory lane for sure!
Overall, we would recommend people make the journey to enjoy this experience. It's not Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, but it is probably some place Ruth would...
Read moreWhere do I start? Wow! Cowboy Dinner Tree is an all around amazing experience! Fun yard games and delightful gift shop while you wait. Though, since reservations are necessary, make sure to check in so they know you are there and can get your table ready. Drinks came out right away with a choice of pink lemonade, iced tea or coffee. Or mix the lemonade and tea for an Arnold Palmer! Our server doubled checked our main course as you need to reserve a chicken or steak ahead of time. Make sure to let them know how you want your steak cooked as they cook them medium rare otherwise. Salads then came out with a honey mustard or ranch dressing option. Mixing them together was good as well. Following was a large pan of rolls (there were 8 rolls for just the two of us!) as well as a big bowl of butter and cowboy baked beans. (There is honey in the sugar bowl packets if you want a little sweet for your roll, I missed it and used a little sugar packet instead, still a great choice!) After stuffing yourself with that, then came the main course with a baked potatoes and sour cream, chives, bacon bits and cheese! We both got steaks and found out that they are about 32oz each! Food for days! Rounding out the meal with a nice small piece of yummy strawberry shortcake! Wow! Plenty to take home and eat for a couple days. They have bags and small containers for the beans. Make sure to bring cash as it’s cash only, a cooler for your to-go food and hide a couple dollars around to commemorate your time there! Service was excellent, attentive and food and atmosphere was so good! A new annual tradition for our family. Can’t wait to come...
Read moreIf you are even in Bend or Sisters this place is a once in a lifetime experience. It's in the middle of nowhere and kind of looks like a shack, but it really made for an authentic and unique experience.
I live in Portland and drove in. I made a reservation a week in advance for 4:00. The booking process was very easy and the person on the phone was very friendly. She asked me what I want to eat "The Chicken" or "The Steak"(They serve four course meals with these as your mains). I chose the steak of course.
I arrived a little before 4, after a two hour drive from Bend. Its down a windy gravel road and kinda looks like a shack. I was shocked at how many people were there on a cold January day in the middle of no where.
While waiting for the restaurant to open they have a little gift shop with a great steak selection.
The restaurant opened at a minute or so before 4 and all guests were asked for reservation names and were promptly seated. The service was absolutely top notch. They were warm and genuine and just a refreshing change from the snooty entitled sort of waiters you get at restaurants in Portland.
The meal was out of this world. They start with a huge salad with the most amazing homemade ranch and honey mustard dressing, then comes the homemade cowboy bread and pot of baked beans, then the main event...your massive perfectly cooked steak(medium-rare) with a baked potato, then they end things off with a strawberry shortbread.
All of this is a flat $50 cash only. This meal and experience was worth so much more than $50 and a two hour car drive.
This place is an...
