UNGLUABLICH! Seriously, terrific food and great beer. Dont settle for the lesser beers on the menu. Instead, opt for the angel tears turned blessed beers that will soothe your soul.
Beer-
The dark Awsem Bock, if I remember right (I had a "few"), is simply the best beer I have had in 40 years of trying many beers.
I opted for the sampler at first. The blonde is excellent but it's just a little weak for me. The wheat and the amber were more tasty still, but nothing compared to the Awsem. So, drink and be merry! On a more specific note to the "I dont drink because of X health reason" crowd: I have a few health issues and beer usually triggers my rare form of migraines, among other issues. This beer had zero ill effects, it was just a great experience.
Food:
Giant, warrior portions. Everything in the Valley is expensive. But, I will get 3 meals from this and the price is about normal for an eatery "not in the valley but still somewhat expensive".
It's as if the monks not only blessed the beer (which they actually do) but also the food. The sausages were perfect. The goulasch soup delicious! I ate my soup and bread like a true heathen, rip and dip!
This is a "must-eat" restaurant. Plus, it is wonderful for the whole family. This is not a bar or club house, it is a family restaurant. Eat here, and you will thank me (virtually, cuz meeting a stranger from the interwebs would be wierd for me).

Read moreIf you have ever traveled through Southern Germany and stopped in an Alpine Lodge or Gasthaus and enjoyed yourself then you have to check this place out. It is the most authentic place I have found in the states. It is located about half way up the mountain to Wheeler peak( highest point in NM). We met Jamie Schulze ,the wife of the man with whom together started the place, he is apparently from Bavaria and knew what he was doing when he designed this place. We went in late August and just like Bavaria the weather on the mountain turned bad quickly. Hailing ice cold etc. After a few minutes all the hikers were huddled in the place on long benches and tables swapping stories. I swear it was just like being back in Berchtesgaden. The food is 100% authentic ( we can argue later about the pairings),and they have great Hoffbrau beer. It was an amazing place. Jamie also showed us the rooms upstairs that are awesome and designed like A typisch Alps Gasthouse except they have private bathrooms. Shannon, the manager did an amazing job of following up with us and making us feel at home also. Great food, great people, great atmosphere, great beer, great location, what's left? We are going to spend New Years...
Read moreWe were out for a day of skiing and stopped at the Bavarian for a little break. Usually the food is outstanding. Today that was not the case. I had a cup of coffee, which is the worst cup of coffee I have had in decades. It was extremely bitter. It was weak. It had no flavor And it left me with a mild stomach ache. How that’s possible in Taos I don’t know. We have a local coffee roaster and there are numerous exceptional coffee roasters in Santa Fe so good coffee is local. This tasted like some bad canned coffee from the 70s. Truly awful. I have had coffee at the Bavarian before and it was not what I had today. My friend had a bowl of the vegan gluten-free soup. We are always happy to see that since we are both gluten-free and vegetarian. And the soup was quite nice, but the bowl was half empty. It was a cup of soup in a large bowl. $10 for a cup of soup? It’s possible that it was so popular that that was all that was left, we don’t know. When I ski with this particular friend, this is our go to and we’ve never had a bad experience like we did today. Maybe it was an off day. It was quite crowded. It was otherwise an absolutely beautiful day. Will be back. We just hope...
