Have always made it a point to go to Stookey’s when I’m home visiting family, but this will probably be the last time. While the onion rings were still incredible, this visit was the worst service experience I’ve ever had, anywhere. After an early supper, our plates were cleared around 6:30 PM. We had our credit card out, ready for our check at that time. Our waitress did not return for 20 minutes, and as she passed, not stopping, from tending to another table said “I’ll get your check.” She subsequently walked by our table several times over the next 20 minutes, looking away as I tried to catch her eye to remind her of our check. At this point a man came to the table behind us, who had arrived after us, and told them the computer was down and just to leave $30. When they expressed surprise that they knew this was less that what they ordered, he told them “I’m the owner and I want you to come back, so I’m saying it is ok.” He took care of that and they left. He walked right by our table and did not even look down or inquire how we were doing. About 5 minutes later he came back to provide the same personal attention to the table on the other side of us, who also arrived and finished eating about 30 minutes after us. Again, the owner walked away not even looking at our table. During all of this, our waitress, common to to all of our tables, was nowhere to be seen. I went to the cash register at the back at this point to get help, and their were 6 or 7 wait staff, including our waitress, who briefly looked back at me, all standing and watching the owner look through tickets at the pass. After standing there for about 5 minutes, one of them, not our waitress, curtly said, “what do you need?” When I said we had been waiting for our check for 45 minutes, she said “someone will be with you in a minute; what table?”, then walked away. I went back to our table and after another 5 minutes, was about to just leave what I thought would cover the bill and walk out, when our original waitress came by with the excuse for the delay (but with no apology or offer of amends) being the computer was down, but carrying a computer generated ticket. When I asked why the tables on either side of us and who came later than us were able to get their checks and leave, she only offered that the owner was supposed to have taken care of our table too. Bottom line, horrible customer service, differential treatment of patrons, and no apparent concern for customer inconvenience or experience (and all in a freezing cold dining room) made this a horrible evening. Not worth $50 for 2 catfish dinners, even if the onion rings are great, to be...

This place was one of my favorite places to take my girlfriend for a wonderful lunch. However, our last visit was woefully lacking in quality, friendliness, and overall experience. We will NOT be going back! The main issue was the food. My girlfriend ordered the smothered chicken that she had most of the times we went there. Usually it is wonderful, but this time it took longer for us to get the food. The owner came to the table and said they made it incorrectly and had to remake the dish. While we were waiting, my prime rib sat under a heat lamp or some way to keep it hot which made it over cooked. Finally when our meals came out, my girlfriend's smothered chicken was presented at the table as a plain chicken breast. We told the waiter that it was supposed to have mushrooms and cheese on it rather than plain. After all, it is SMOTHERED chicken. They took it to the kitchen, slapped a piece of cheese on the chicken and tossed some canned mushroom on top. One, the cheese is supposed to be on top of the mushrooms. Two, the mushrooms were luke-warm. Finally, it lacked so much flavor on top of the miserable presentation. The owner came out and asked how things were. We told him the issue with the smothered chicken to which his reply was "It doesn't get better than this. I made it myself." Well, if that's the case, he needs to hire back his chef that had obviously left. The smugness of this owner and his lack of personal skills will be, along with the high prices, will be the downfall of this once wonder establishment. It is sad to have to change this review from five stars to two stars, but I would not be a good reviewer if I didn't reflect a true and...

Food was great but the waitress seemed a little rushed, a little intimidated. She didn't give us a chance to finish completing our order. My daughter got a kids meal that came with a salad but my husband ate it, that's when I noticed he took a bite with a hair in it. When we got the onion rings they were awesome but we then noticed we had only two sets of silver ware we told her but she said the salad forks are fine. Then we were so rushed to order dinner she completely wrote down my meal wrong she gave me smothered chicken when I ordered chopped steak. It tasted good but she rushed it back and made me wait while my family was eating. So the mistake took time and money because then they were offering more stuff of ice cream another baked potato and cheese cake for free which we would have been fine with half off my meal or free. Our bill was still high $68 plus we gave a $13 tip. Some people that worked there went by our table and said get your ice cream ask your waitress their giving free ice cream tonight. We walked out after that and they were outside smoking with the owner and we got stared down. Probably will never recommend this place neither go back. Food was good but too pricey for any messed up orders...

Going in it seems like this place is the small town gem. The staff is largely friendly and good. The onion rings come. They’re great. Light breading on light onion. Then the catfish. Not the most flavorful but good enough. Not sure about the hype though. Hash browns as a side though. They were surprisingly great! Then there is the bourbon situation. When you go into the lounge side you will see a plethora of rare, fantastic bourbon. However this apparently is the owners private selection and basically off-limits unless he’s in the mood. So while you can see great bourbon you’re left with a regular selection. Not bad just bizarre. I would go back but with experience in mind I would do a little different.

Great bar, friendy staff, even better food! Stookey's is a staple in Thorntown with many of its customers returnign since they were children. Start of at the bar where it is always a friendly atmosphere and plenty of people are hanging out. The bartenders make stiff drinks and they have a large selection of liquors , beer, and wine. Appetizers are great and the onion rings are the best in the state! The multiple dining rooms are warm and inviting and the wait is typically short if you have to wait at all. If you are going for dinner I suggest the catfish. Always delicious!

We stopped here for dinner this evening, and overall were pleased! We ordered the sampler apprtizer; tenderloin and fries; cheeseburger and fries; and a piece of key lime pie. The food was all well prepared and tasty, the portions for the appetizer, sandwiches and fries were large and appropriately priced. Our server, Mikaela (I'm sorry if I spelled it wrong) was friendly, attentive without being overbearing, and added to the experience in a positive manner. The only drawback is that for the price of the key lime pie, it was an extremely small portion.
