Having read a previous recommendations for Oaxaqueno the wife and I decided to try it out tonight. First of all, do not be put off by the location. The front of the business could use a little touch up but the food inside is what matters and it was well worth the visit. We were greeted by a very nice young lady who told us to pick a table and she quickly returned and took our drink order. On the wall behind the register are several pictures of different plates and soups and they all looked delicious but after seeing the picture of the beef soup I knew I was going to have soup tonight. One thing about me is that I NEVER order soup at a restaurant. In my mind I believe that if I am out to eat then I want something substantial and I want to leave full and soup just doesn't usually do that.
We were served our drinks and chips and salsa and the chips were just made fresh and were warm and crispy.
Yes I did order the beef soup (Caldo De Res) and since it was only soup I also ordered 2 beef tacos and my wife ordered the enchilada plate which had three enchiladas along with rice and beans. We waited only a short time and our plates were brought to the table and the bowl of (Unfilling??) soup was huge. I immediately regretted ordering the additional tacos while I took in the bowl of soup in front of me. The soup had a large chunk of carrot, cabbage, zucchini and ear of corn and two large chunks of beef. My first thought was how in the hell am I going to cut these vegetables and meat in this bowl and I wished I had a knife. After using my spoon to cut into the carrot and the beef I found the reason a knife isn't brought to the table. All of the vegetables and beef were spoon cutting tender and were very very good. The soup has such a wonderful flavor that I will be ordering it again in the near future and I told my wife that I had never had a soup with this type of flavor before. I offered a sample of the bowl and broth to my wife and she had the look I must of had when you taste something good that you have never had before. Three corn tortillas were brought with the soup and in all of my years at Mexican restaurants around the county I have never had corn tortillas as good as these were. Two bottles of a red and green salsa were also brought out and my wife and I both thought they had very good flavor. My wife's plate of three enchiladas were presented very nicely and tasted just as good. She ordered beef, chicken and cheese and they were all wrapped in homemade tortillas and my wife said they were excellent and I had to agree. The two additional , traditional taco's I ordered were brought out with lime and had cilantro and onions on them and while I didn't need them they were excellent also.
Overall I give the entire experience and meal a 10. The friendliness of the staff, the quality of the food and the nice clean establishment add up to a very good 10.
I saw on the menu that they also offer breakfast and it has been a long time since I have had a traditional Mexican breakfast and i am sure that Oaxaqueno will do an excellent job. I highly recommend this restaurant and we will...
Read moreMy husband and I have gone there at lease 8 times in a two week span. We absolutely LOVE the food.!!!!!! Oh their flan is to die for!!!! I'm so happy that we don't live very far from the restaurant. It's about time that Oakland got a decent place to eat also the young man who works at the register is so good at taking orders then translating them back to the cook, doing cash register and if you are paying by debit card uses that square (I didn't even know what it was called let alone how to use it) when we walk in, he remembers what I order: 3 beef pan fried tacos minus lettuce +tomatoes add onions. I could go on and on about how GREAT the food + service are but I think I got my message across. A very happy and Stuffed...
Read moreWhile driving from Minnesota to Texas, we came across this restaurant by accident. Our meal consisted of Flautas de Pollo, Torta de Pollo Guisado, Tacos de Cabeza, Tacos de Fajita, Sope de Fajita, and Tacos de Pollo Guisado...... this food is cooked to order and was absolutely delicious. The owner makes her own Oaxaca Mole and was kind enough to give us a sample. The mole is very tasty and one of the best moles I have ever had. They serve the meals with an orange sauce (semi spicy) and a green sauce (very spicy) that are very tasty. Although this restaurant would be considered a "hole in the wall" to some, it is worth stopping and enjoying a nice...
