I have very find memories of The Alabama Hotel, from childhood on. My uncle owned a place up the road for many years and we'd periodically head over for a roast beef and a soda, and the when I was a little more grown up, a beer and a roast beef. For quite a while now, I've watched them on Facebook and heard stories, but I must confess I hadn't been back in many years. I came through the neighborhood with my wife a month or so ago and lucky for us. We were hungry. The missus actually called it out and said,"Hey, I've never been here, and you've been talking about it for years now." I'm super glad we stopped. My memory might be foggy, but the place is certainly a little more polished than I remember. Lucky enough, though, they still managed to hang on to that gin mill, corner bar vibe. Don't get me wrong, it's certainly family friendly, but it's the kind of place that I wouldn't feel weird striking up a conversation with the folks to take over. And I bet the staff knows your name by the second or third visit. Honestly, I wish they were a bit closer to home, but they're not really out of our range for a good dinner. We started off with a French onion soup split between us. It was a solid soup. Some prefer more beefy flavor and some more onion flavor, and this one definitely tended towards the beefy side. There were plenty of onions, though, and a serious layer of bread and cheese, and let's face it, we all really dig into onion soup for that cheesy crust. We then split a prime rib sammy. This was roasted prime rib, probably a good way to use leftovers, grilled, then topped with crumbly blue cheese, and served on a nice roll. This one had the wife's name all over it. She'll put crumbly blue cheese on her crumbly blue cheese, if you know what I mean. It's not always my favorite on a sandwich, but it worked here. Beef was tender and flavorful, too. It's definitely a quality piece of meat. I never would've picked this sandwich, but in the end, I loved it. That's how perfectly executed it was. We also split an order of wings, "Swamp Style," which was hot and bbq, with a little bit of cajun, amd we decided to "get smokey" by having our wings tossed on the chargrill to finish. Wings were damn near perfect. We certainly chose a sloppy medley of sauces, but the wings were hot and crispy and delicious, and id get them just the same next time. I like to call the style of service, " family casual" or something like that. Our server was awesome. She was taking care of a lot of tables, but we never really wanted for anything. Again, nothing formal, because it was as if we were already all good friends, All of our needs were met, at despite being total strangers, we felt welcomed right from the minute that we walked in the door. To sum it up, very comfortable place to drop in for a meal. Friendly and attentive service. Fantastic, like, really excellent, food. Nice overall atmosphere with lots of history and nostalgia. If you happen to be in the Alabama Swamps, or headed home from Darien Lake, or anything else thst way, do yourself a favor and check out...
Read morejune 27 2025: Party of 4 of us arrived just before 7PM, expected a wait which was fine, We were seated in about an hour. Our Waitress took our orders telling us they were out of fish, which again is not a problem (disappointment but it is was it is) our table ordered pork chop with baked potato, filet with baked potato, pork chop with asparagus and signature chicken and biscuits. We went to salad bar and were 100% ignored until 45 minutes later when waitress came out and said they were out of baked potato for 2 of our table, they changed to fries which we all know take just a 5 minutes to cook, 15 minutes now rolls forward and its 9PM now and nothing.....9:05 she bring out first two orders COLD!!!! and tells my wife oh yeah we are out of asparagus then asks who had the chicken parm.... I politely said no one she then looked at her book and said oh chicken and biscuits. At this point it was well after 9PM and frankly we were not going to wait another 30 minutes to get new orders in.... we were all done being treated like this. I would honestly give them a ZERO if this let me. The worst thing was management was sitting just a couple tables over and did nothing because he was to busy talking to his friends. I truly am sorry to write this but something has to be done I do not know what happened to this place, our group has gone there many times in the past waited and had times when fish was gone, but we have never been treated like this and thus it is not somewhere I would recommend as the management obviously...
Read moreThis is a review for our prime rib dinner for two. We should have known from the start by the silverware(could purchase better at a thrift store) I understand bars would take this as a last consideration but it is mostly a restaurant. Then the huge containers of cheap bulk salad dressings at the salad bar minus any blue cheese. How does a bartender not know what a Shirley temple is and mess that up. Ok the outer ring of prime rib was “ok”. We both ordered medium rare, husband likes it almost rare. That being said the rest of it was very rare practically mooing still. Had to ask for horseradish, tiny and I mean tiny side cups of what slightly resembles horseradish that only tastes like vinegar. The twice baked potato was just chopped up potatoes mixed with a bit of shredded cheese and pepper. Was actually room temp too. My husband explained that his iced tea tasted like someone was just soaking the ice tea container with water and decided to call it tea. Bits of the edge of the prime rib was so salty it’s almost inedible, not to mention the salt shaker that just pours the salt out no shaking required. The waitress was very pleasant, she offered to get the manager but I just wanted to give them an honest opinion. We didn’t want a discount, or free anything. We just needed them to know how awful the meal really was. Worst restaurant food I’ve had in many years. I do not recommend unless the get a new cook or teach the one they have...
