I'm ashamed to say that we only discovered the Twins this summer, even though we've been to Brule many times--usually on our way to someplace else. Twin Gables is one of those classic out-of-the-way places. Or it might be ON the way, but it's worth the stop. We have been twice now, and I've enjoyed everything except the slaw--not my Mom's recipe--but hey, I don't eat at her place any more. I would deduct a tenth from their score only because they don't have a fireplace, but they earn extra credit for the pie. Oh! the pie. In fact, next time I'm going to START with pie, and then box the meal, if necessary. The pie is amazing. I was lucky I asked about the coconut cream after we sat down: there was one piece left, so I set the hook hard. Twin Gables has got most of what you want in a comfortable, come as you are, talk to your neighbor, up-north themed restaurants: knotty pine everywhere, a quaint back-room bar, scads of tables that can be pushed together for any size gang you march in (which doesn't seem to bother the staff one bit), a nice bunch of comfortable booths, great homemade food, including the best hash browns I've ever had (cheese and onions and BROWNED the way I asked for them). I said "homemade" though I was able to elicit a confession from an owner who admitted they don't make the cheesecake on the premises. That's the only thing they don't cook from scratch. The staff is congenial and helpful: we were originally going to sit in the bar to have a cocktail, but the waitress said we could sit in the dining room and take as long as we wanted to imbibe before ordering. That was nice, so we did. The good service never stopped. Frequent quiet walk-by checks, always with a smile, to make sure we were still happy or ready to order, and never once interrupting our conversation. The bar was packed, yet surprisingly quiet--probably because the conversation there melded nicely with the dining room crowd, who obviously thought they were at home. And that's how you'll feel when you come. It...
Read moreThis place is truly amazing. Theresa was our server and she couldn’t have been better. Prompt service, smiling faces, attention to tables before and after the meals.
We had 12 of us for breakfast no reservation and we’re sat down immediately. It seemed that everyone in town comes here as the place was filled. Coffee was never less then a half a cup, I had biscuits and gravy with two eggs over easy that was just what I was looking and hoping I would receive. We asked Theresa if the corned beef was fresh made in house and she looked at us puzzled with the expression of “what else do you think we would do?”
The county fried steak one of our group was “the best and freshest I have ever eaten”. I didn’t try it, but I can tell this thing was the solid deal. Soaked in buttermilk and Crispy batter dipped served with incredibly fluffy eggs and hash browns so crispy and perfectly seasoned.
I could go on here about the breakfast but I think you get it…
Their is also a bakery in the restaurant as well where I seen a raspberry rhubarb pie and a blueberry pie that still honestly has steam coming off it…. They looked like they would easily be the blue ribbon winner at any country fair..
This place was the best breakfast place I could remember
5 stars all...
Read moreThere is a happy spirit here. I found the place by chance and was hoping for a good breakfast but breafast is over at 12:30, at least on a Sunday it is. I missed it by 2 minutes but then I was informed about the lunch special - barbecue ribs, corn on the cob and potato salad. See my photo. Yes, the ribs were so nicely done that they were hard to get with a fork and the BBQ sauce was excellent. The corn was cooked to perfection and candy sweet, while the potato salad was equal to my own, heck maybe a little bit better.... And don't forget that they have real homemade cake and pies made right there. Oh, decisions decisions. I chose the decadent chocolate cake with the caramel and coconut. Had to take it with me though as no stomach room after the rib meal. I Heated it up as advised - oh my oh my what a delight ! There is outdoor seating and they have their own ice cold artesian water, you are welcomed to fill your jugs. If you are ever in the area, DO not pass it by. If I were you, I'd plan on...
