My mother and I decided to have lunch at Port o Call today. This is now the third time I've gone and have been disappointed! My mother had an iceberg wedge, it wasn't iceberg lettuce it was a romaine leaf. She asked for no bacon, and it came with no bacon, no blue cheese crumbles and watered down blue cheese dressing. Mind you this as well as everything else on the menu has gone up extremely in pricing. I had a Caprese wrap.... it had very little meat on it and was mostly lettuce and tomato. A tiny little basket that had fries... a small fries at McDonald's gives you more. Not to mention we were seated and comfortable, had already placed our drink order and a waitress whom wasn't ours told us we had to move rather snotty like. That we couldn't sit next to the large table beside us, they had to space everyone out. So we were moved to a corner where they have the computer that the staff is running back and forth to and clanging the small round plates behind my head the whole time. The prices get higher and higher and the food gets smaller and smaller. And the staff gets larger attitudes. It has come to the point when you order a lobster dish, you get a single fork full and your vegetables are not included. You also have to ask for the complimentary bread. Seems to me that Mr. Guido is now running off his reputation and location. Not about giving the proper food that he keeps hiking the prices up for. If we are going to keep spending 28.00 30.00 for a lunch plate, please put that amount of food on it! If we are going to pay 50.00 for a lobster dish ( not a whole lobster a lobster dish) give more then a fork full in the tail. Include the measley little scoop of vegetable and be courteous with your customers and offer them the dinner bread free of charge! You made a big clientele, KEEP treating them the way they should be treated and what they are giving you their...
Read moreMy husband and I were visiting family on a hot, mid-July Tuesday evening. We had been boating all day in the heat and were indecisive about everything. We sat outside, and had a nice view of the water, however, it wound up being too hot so the nice hostess moved us inside. I can admit that we were being a pain in the neck since our arrival. The heat had gotten the best of us and we could no longer think for ourselves. We were at a mostly seafood establishment, but wanted Italian. This could have been a disaster. Our waitress, Maddy, was quick-witted and perfectly capable of handling our challenges. If we had a question, she had an answer. We had a few mixed drinks that were well balanced, followed by appetizers that included the garlic bread with cheese, shrimp, and wedge salad. We were pleased with our choices and enjoyed tasting and sharing amongst ourselves. My brother ordered the chicken wrap with fries and said it was fresh and tasty. My sister and I both ordered the fettuccine Alfredo and shared some broccoli. My husband had the chicken over linguine. We all enjoyed our very large portions and took some of it home. The real star of the show was Matty! Because of our waitress, we had an amazing experience that could have gone sideways. We laughed and joked the whole night and it was just the atmosphere we needed to clear our brain fog. We will return while visiting the area again. The food was great, but the service we received was top-notch. Our check came with a thank-you note and a drawing of our meal. We loved that part because it was unexpected, random, and hilarious. Icing on the cake!! Maddy created a memorable experience that we will share with family and friends for generations. Keep up the good...
Read moreLike most places there were high and lows. Let's start with the highs.
The people at Frank Guido's are super nice! From the hostess to the waitresses, we really appreciate their friendly demeanor. The final lobster we had was very good. Plump and sweet, broiled perfectly. The fish and chips were pretty decent as well. Large pieces of flaky cod. And unfortunately, thus ends the highs.
All of the rest of the food ranged from bad to inedible. The shrimp in the cocktail were hard and rubbery. The oysters were not spit and sandy; and anyway their flavor was putrid. The salad tasted fresh, but was coated in what tasted like cheap, commercial dressing. All the rest of the seafood was bad as well. And the various crab stuffing all had cheese, which wasn't said ahead, even though I said I have a dairy allergy. We wouldn't have ordered it either way, as cheese has no place in crab stuffing.
Finally, there's the atmosphere. We love sitting outside, but from the mismatched chairs to the random canopies, this looks like your gramps's yard. And it seems to be pandemic in Athens or maybe most of central NY, but the cheap silverware... Wasn't Oneida around here somewhere?
I genuinely believe that Frank Guido's had an opportunity to be "on the map" -- a real destination. 1. Charge $5 more per entree and upgrade the recipes, retrain kitchen staff, and use fresh, homemade everything. 2. Invest $200k into decor, particularly outside. 3. Establish a dress code for the waitstaff. You'd have the Hudson scene lined up...
