This is our go-to spot during the pandemic. The pricing structure of the menu and the scalability of their drinks make the experience incredibly versatile. No matter how busy they get, you can still distance fairly easily, and Josiah is just plain good to talk to and obviously cares about his community. Here is a rundown of the menu:
-Chicken Thigh: great flavor and texture, we get it every time. While it is always good, it does appear to be consistently better during the day rather than at night. For $6, it's a steal whenever though. -Mac and Cheese: a slight bit greasier than I would like, but despite that (or maybe because of it) this is my personal favorite mac in the Catskills. I'll make a special trip for this dish. -Hassleback Potato: this is just plain cool. I love to see dishes like this on menus. And it is GOOD, served with dill and sour cream, it's the potato dish your life has been missing. -Crispy Rice and Bean: a simple offering but also a really nurturing and satisfying dish. Wouldn't mind a bit more banana pepper, but that is just me. It's almost as if they mixed "soccarat" (crispy rice from the bottom of a pan most notably in paella) in the dish, which deepens the flavor and adds a nice texture. -Flank Steak: could have used a bit of char, but the cook was PERFECT. Though the flavor and texture are amazing, fair warning, it doesn't scratch the desire for grilled or charred steak. That being said, the great funky beefy flavor really does it for me here. -Grilled Romaine: this is a good dish, but I don't think it translates well to a to-go menu. It was a little over wilted by the time we ate it. Flavor was still good and it definitely didn't get tossed, but it lost something between the plating and the consumption. If you order, eat immediately. -Roasted Cheese Board: the cheeses are really great, but I couldn't eat the bread (allergic to sesame). I get the impression that would have really sealed the deal. I didn't get to eat the dish as intended, so take my comments with a grain of salt here. It looked like it could have used a fruity element of some sort (a jam or a preserve) to go with the bread and cheese to make a little "sando".
As far as the drinks are concerned, we have tried them all, and while there are no duds, the Feed n Seed comes out on top. It is a really tasty and well made beverage. Make it a triple so you can sip on it for a while after getting home.
It isn't just that the food and drinks are good here, the whole concept is obviously very highly considered and cared for. The product is mostly local, and you can feel the connection to the area every time you stop by. This wasn't an accident, it was the point. It's why I'm always excited to go, and why it doesn't seem to get old, no matter how many...
Read moreHad a great time at the Fire Station. Love the dark industrial vibe. We went there on a Tuesday with our two yr old and it was pretty relaxed/empty with a family of four on the other side of the lower floor and a couple a few tables down. Looks like there was only three staff members (bartender, server and cook) and even so food was brought out quickly. The food was great (the potato, steak, mac and cheese and a few other things I'm forgetting). FYI you order at the bar and if you have a clamping seat for a toddler just be aware that the tables (the small square ones) will tilt with the weight so have someone keep their leg on the table leg to keep it leveled.
Updated review Feb 2024: Seating was difficult on a Saturday night with staff not being helpful with seating. It seems that it's just a free for all so we just grabbed a table on the bench after it opened up. Bartenders were busy and it took a while to get hold of someone to pay for the check. Food was ok this time around.. the potato was burned on the bottom and on one end. The steak was a little red and my stomach did not have a good time after. Staff didn't ask at all how to have it cooked. Fried chicken was a bit bland this time. I think moving forward my family and I will be checking out the other businesses in the area. Thanks for the service the few times we've...
Read moreSo this previous Monday the girlfriend and I decided to go on a drive to Cochecton. I’m pleased to say, what started as a wild hunt for Green Chartreuse for work turned into an incredible time at the Cochecton Fire House. The bartender was super cool and knowledgeable. He looked like he loved his job and knew his way around the bar.
To start, we ordered 2 HOUSE-MADE Sodas which let me say may sound like a small detail, but for me, freshness and house quality is miles above store bought junk. Needless to say the drinks were amazing, i wish i got a cocktail but I didn’t want to drink before riding all the way back home.
The food was excellent, it wasn’t only great tasting, but they were well proportioned and very presentable. The only thing i can say I wasn’t 100% happy with was the wood-fired toasted Rye Bread. It seriously shredded the top of my mouth, but I appreciated the idea of it. Perhaps less time in the oven would’ve helped. Although that wasn’t a deal breaker at all. I’d definitely go again if i were ever in the area again and would recommend the hassleback potatoes, mac & cheese, and spinach & artichoke dip. All...
