A unique experience in the middle of nowhere, we arrived at around 10:00 am on a Wednesday in July. Guests in our party had seen this place featured on food tv. There was a 40 minute wait, which was ok because the weather was perfect. We played a round of cribbage with the cards and board provided and we were in! Service was ok at best, but that's not why we came - the food was excellent! We had a party of 8, and tried every breakfast item listed. All agreed that the Mex Benny was the best!
One quirky thing: our waitress was apologetic about the prices. She gave us some spiel about the tip being included in the menu pricing so that the waitstaff could be paid $15 an hour, which to us meant that $14 eggs were actually only $11 eggs since tip was included. NOT so! Beware that a 20% gratuity is automatically ADDED to your bill, whether the service is worthy or not. $14 eggs are actually going to cost you $17.
A fun little visit, but unlikely to return. I felt deceived from the start. Can't afford $150 for two dozen eggs and a loaf of bread. At least not more than once in a blue moon.
OK, I just feel I HAVE to respond to Delta Diner's reply: The wording in their written reply demonstrates PRECISELY why I felt a little deceived after leaving there, and why I am now feeling a bit angry. An explanation for why the prices have been "raised" 20% is interesting, but why, then, do you it as a 20% surcharge to the bill? That's your "increase" in prices?? A straight up raise in the prices posted on the menu by 20% with the explanation that we have a no-tip model would be more accurate. I realize that perhaps in the hinterland, you cannot afford to scare people away with Chicago prices, but at least increasing prices on your menu would be more intellectually honest and morally acceptable than kind of hiding behind an added gratuity on the bill and obscure wording. That reply did it for me.... I won't be back! A neat little out of the way place, but still, practicing a masked bait-and-switch. Your menu says one thing, your prices reflect a different reality, and your waitstaff has been trained to memorize a carefully crafted statement to muddle the issue. Kinda slimy. Y'all can make up their own mind. I prefer straight shooters. I still stand by my statement on the quality of food, but the rest I...
Read moreThe wait is long. The menu is limited. The specials of the day are usually the coveted items but are unpredictable. The price is costly. The service is way above average. We have only gone for breakfast 3x as this is a little out of the way for us and with an hour long wait each time we have to have the time to spare but we have never been disappointed. Their baker has moved on so thus far there is no in house bakery to serve but the rest of the food does stand on its own. Truthfully, outside of my own eggs cooked in my own kitchen, these have been the best eggs I have ever been delighted to eat in a restaurant. That may not sound like a big deal to most, but a cook can be judged by how well he/she can cook a simple egg and to an egg snob like myself it means a willingness to return time and again to a diner if perfection is found. The actual place is an old fashion small diner, the booths are tiny, the place in cramped, there are counter seats but those are cramped as well but I have never seen a cleaner establishment. The waitstaff is fun, knowledgeable, and right on the money each time. No tipping is allowed as it is included in the bill but I have certainly attempted to leave extra as the service has just been down right brilliant. Now if I could just be there the one day they are making the dutch oven pancakes life would...
Read moreDelta Diner is one of the most unique and enjoyable diner experiences I have encountered. Tucked away in the Northern woods of Wisconsin, the diner rests rather unassuming along the roadway, the only indicator of it's potential the full parking lot with eager customers waiting in their vehicles for their chance to partake of the delicious food inside.
Once a spot has been secured, the experience whips to life, starting with a tour of the seasonal menu filled with creative, one-of-a-kind dishes, most of which revolving around breakfast.
The prices seem a bit high at first glance, but tips are not accepted and for the quality of the food, the cost is reasonable.
The array of options can stump an undecided first-timer, so it may be advisable to bring a friend or two and split dishes to maximize your ability to try the different options.
Given the small space, the smells, sounds, and even sights of the meal being prepared are prevalent, each adding to the anticipation in their own way.
Local ingredients, including local coffee, help to ground you in the area, and the service is superb.
Make sure you try the homemade hot sauces; though they won't really leave you burning, they all have their own flavor profiles and compliment the different dishes in their own way.
Definitely stop here if you get a chance....
