Old Mill... This one truly puzzles me. There are so many glowing reviews for Old Mill and our experience didn't really match any of that.
Don't get me wrong, this was in no way due to the wait staff! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. But pretty much everything else about this experience was par or below.
We arrived and entered into what initially looks like a small gift shop. This area is decorated with very out of date decor (and this will continue to be a pattern for the rest of the establishment) and I at first wondered if we were at the right place. We were greeted withing 60 seconds and we waited about 5 minutes to be shown our table, into a big dining room that was also filled with outdated decor, contributing to a very 50's (and not in the charming way) atmosphere.
Now, I can get over the decor if the food is good. The menu consists of a bunch of different options ranging from steaks and roast beef, to chicken, a cheeseburger option and seafood, to appetizers of mushroom caps and escargot. For a fine dining establishment, the menu is somewhat all over the place. I ended up ordering the Chicken Old Mill, with the other members of my party ordering the ribeye and the Ratatouille.
Now, each of the entrees comes with a soup or salad, rolls, a starch (baked potato this visit), a vegetable (green beans this time), and a "relish tray". The relish tray is honestly enough food for a party of four to have as THE meal. It is wildly unnecessary for that much to be on the tray for any less than 8 people and I can't see it as anything less than a money pit by serving that much to smaller parties. To give credit where it's due, the dinner rolls were very good, having both standard and a light cinnamon roll option in the basket, and the soup of the evening, Lentil, was tasty as well.
The entrees, sadly, were underwhelming across the board. The Ribeye was cooked perfectly, but lacked any type of seasoning. The ratatouille was par for the course and the chicken old mill had some flavor, but the presentation and the texture had me feeling like these dishes were reheated and not cooked fresh. The portion size of the chicken was also underwhelming, as I would have much rather had less of the relish tray and more of my main course.
Overall, I really would like to hope that our experience with the food wasn't the norm. Old Mill has such high reviews that it seems odd for our experience to have been so different from others. However the one thing that is for sure is that they could really use a remodel. It's a great space and some modernization would...
Read moreA group of seven from my family ate here Sunday. I do not live in the area but was here 10 years ago and never forgot it! We were greeted by the friendliest of people and seated at a table by the window so we could watch the creek just below. It is a beautiful view. Our server was Sarah, and she was chipper and eager to please. My husband tried to give her a hard time the best he could (jokingly) and she served with a smile and was quick witted. She made our time fun. But the service isn't all that is good at the Old MIll! We were served cheese and crackers, warm rolls and a relish tray that is like a rotating salad bar being put in front of you! Check out their pictures and you will see what I mean. There was cottage cheese and better than usual mixed fruit, bean salads, delicious beets, potato salad, coleslaw and strawberry jelly for the cornbread or rolls they give you. A stuffed mushroom with seafood appetizer was ordered and well liked by those who eat seafood (not me). The Chicken and Biscuits, Chicken Old Mill, Broiled marinated Chicken, Strip Steaks and Braised Beef were Entrees thoroughly enjoyed by the family. But wait! They serve vegetarian meals as well! One of our Members had the Roasted Beet Salad which she liked very well and to tell you the truth, I'm going to try that next time I go! Check out their menu and you will see other items on the menu great for a vegetarian. All in all we had a great family meal just as we were all ready to go our separate ways. I think it would make a great place for a wedding, reunion anniversary party, whatever. Nope, I was not paid or asked to do this review. I just wanted to make sure anyone looking for a new place to dine, reads this! I wish we had more places like this in Watertown, NY where I live. I am always looking for a place that has character, good food and...
Read moreCame here for our anniversary for the first time. Hadn't heard anything about it, but figured we'd give it a go. The restaurant is nice and very spacious. Had great views of the river.
The food was great, and not overly pricey. They had a good selection of items on the menu, and also had cocktails. We ordered drinks, an appetizer, and entrees.
Then the unexpected happened. They brought a plate of crackers and cheese spread to the table while we waited. What a nice treat. Especially since we also brought our toddler along (which they were pleasantly surprised with the accommodations of a high chair, crayons, kid menu, etc.).
Then, after the appetizer they brought out a massive "relish tray". Unbeknownst to us, this is apparently something they do, and that patrons look forward to. This too was a welcome surprise. It had beets, cottage cheese, chickpeas, kidney beans, pickles, coleslaw, jelly, and more. This in and of itself was a meal.
Then came our entrees and another surprise dish of green beans. So it seems they essentially give you a dish "on the house" with each course of meal (minus desert). This was all unknown to us since we've never been before. But it sure gave us a wow factor and a great dining experience.
My single complaint, which really isn't one, is that I wish they offered the option to take the leftovers of the tray home. We were also the only table there under the age of 55. Ha.
Service was also great, and we'll...
