This place looks good and the menu seems very appetizing. That is until the food comes out. So we order the Lamb Aus Ju special this evening and the entire experience was depressing. First, there was the drinks. Her beverage was ok. However, mine was a simple coke. A coke with little syrup and almost no carbonation. It was as if it sat in a car for three days. After we managed to order our two sandwiches it took them 30 mins to get them out of the kitchen. The plate contained 1 pickle, some fries and the sandwich with thw Au Jus on the side in a coffee cup. Then there was my sandwich. Completely lacking in meat. The lamb was thin sliced and had virtually no real flavor. At least when I managed to find some bits in my cheese laden bagette. The positive...at least it seemed to be real lamb. The Au Jus sauce was similar to fat mixed brown water. Not real flavor at all. Very bland and to be quite honest in a taste test you wouldnt be able to tell the difference between that and my coke. The most decent part of the meal was the fries. Which is good cause they were a $5 dollar up charge. However, the ketchup on the table seemed to have been a mix of several iterations of bottle consolidation. Yes, ketchup can actually lose its true flavor if this isnt monitored. It would appear no one checks at this place. Long story short...total cost of the meal $70 and change. She and I both left almost as hungry as when we arrived. The downside....we were on a timeline and really didnt have the opportunity to ask the staff to remake it. So this was going to be our only meal before we could get breakfast in the morning. I am not sure how this place touts so many awards. I dont know if it is because there is a lack of options in the area for a sit down place at night or something else.
The one positive is most of the staff is very sweet and delightful. Although there is one who doesnt seem to match the team dynamic.
This is the first and last time I ever go here. It is four star prices with 1.5 star quality. Being a pseudo British themed tavern here is what I can say after living in the UK for a bit. If their goal was to emulate bland British cuisine with no flavor, high prices and small portions. They have succeeded! Maybe that was the judgement and evaluation criteria for all the awards.
My recommendarion: goto a gas station and get a bottled soda and a ready made sandwich. You will at least feel a little fulfilled and have a pricepoint comparable to...
Read moreThe food was excellent, and the servers were the nicest and sweetest!
The one issue I have - Which has less to do with the restaurant itself, but anyone who hasn't visited before should be aware so they aren't caught off guard like we were - is that it's small, and it can get extremely busy. They'll seat anybody when they can. If there's a small group of two or three, there's no space at the bar, and there's a bigger table available, you'll be seated at one of the bigger tables!
Which would be fine, if other patrons weren't unnecessarily rude about it, which was our experience. My boyfriend and I got in before a rush, and since there wasn't any room at the bar, we were seated at one of the larger tables near the front. We didn't just sit down at it, the waitress seated us there. It did eventually get busy after we sat down, and the people coming in didn't like that we were seated where we were.
There was a middle aged couple that ended up standing by our table while they waited to be seated. They would make multiple comments about our table, shoot glances at us, and crowd around us (Despite there being room to stand) until the woman nearly elbowed me in the face. When my boyfriend said something about it and asked them to give me some room, one of the first comments out of this man's mouth was about the table. There was also another man who was waiting to be seated that would repeatedly stare at my boyfriend, who I'm positive was also pretty upset about the seating (But, then again, he could've just been a jerk in general).
The food and service were excellent, and I did have the pleasure of talking to some regulars who were very sweet and understood the way the everything worked! However, keep the smallness and seating in mind so you aren't caught off guard about incredibly rude people like we were, and sadly, I cannot see myself going back in the near future due to how we were treated by...
Read moreI have always heard fantastic things about Man of Kent. My boyfriend has been here twice now. Usually on his way home from work conferences. We decided to finally go here for dinner and I was so excited! We arrived and the view was awesome. We sat in the back of the restaurant overlooking the little river. For starters we ordered the bruschetta. It was unfortunately soggy. I had one piece and although the flavors were there, the bread was just so nasty and couldn't even hold together. I gave it to my boyfriend who eats everything and anything. He even stated that it wasn't good but the flavors were there. (If that makes sense.) Then for my main course I ordered Frutti De Mare - Scampi. It was just terrible. I was super excited to see it placed on the table. It looked beautiful and I have ordered this dish a few different places. I again felt so terrible. I just didn't like it and I really wanted to. My boyfriend felt really bad that he had chosen this place for dinner. He made the comment that maybe you can only order bar food here. I guess so. However, if it's on the menu you should be able to cook everything accordingly and all should come out delicious! I did get to try a few of his french fries which were really good. The restaurant had a weird funky moldy smell. Maybe the carpet? I feel so bad that we paid so much money on beers and a dinner that I just did not enjoy. The Reuben was good as well. I had to share my boyfriends dinner. I will not be returning. I am just really upset that I heard such great things and it turned out to be a bad experience. Maybe if I do return I will have to specifically order "bar food." Shouldn't be the case though. The memorabilia was nice to see...
