You're driving through a teeny town, and coming up to this building makes you feel like you're going back in time. Thank God they haven't renovated a thing to "modern" (yuck) standards. This is old school as good as it gets - the way things used to be, and the way a WI Friday night fish fry should be. There is nothing fancy here, and that's a good thing. This place is the happening spot on a Friday night in Pine River. Known as having the longest bar in the state of WI. Serving Fridays only, 4-7:30. Get there early, because they fill up fast. Friendly service. A fun place to visit with people sitting near you, and the food is outstanding! Homemade German potato salad, coleslaw and tartar. Hand-breaded fish. Very simple menu. Just an ice cream sundae for dessert, or there were slices of homemade desserts packaged and stacked on the bar. Two fish plates for us were $23. With 2 sodas, we spent a total of $27. History on the building: Built as a general store by Alanson Mellen Kimball (1827-1923), who is listed on Findagrave as a "famous burial" in the Pine River Cemetery. Info on him: U.S. Congressman. He was elected to represent Wisconsin's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1875-1877. He also served as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate from 1863-1864, and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention from...
Β Β Β Read moreOne of my favorite places to go for Friday night fish when I am in the area. You know how it is... You can ask 10 different people where their favorite place to go for goof Friday night fish is, and you will get 10 ( maybe 11) different answers. I get it. Some places can have great perch and bluegill, but not so good cod. Some places all buy the same pre-breaded fish from the same distributor so it all tastes like the next guys fish. The hardest ones to figure out is the places that buy some of their fish already breaded and then bread their own walleye and so on. In the case of Golden Nugget I have had their walleye, bluegill, and perch and had it taste like it really was caught that very day. The food will come on a paper plate with plastic utensils, so if you are looking for fancy, this ain't it. The soda pop comes in cans, so there aren't any free refills. If you want good tasting fish on Fridays ( it is the only night that this place is really open) and want it in an authentic old Wisconsin bar, this place...
Β Β Β Read moreI got put into a $400 a night room. Daughter was getting married and everyone was at this hotel. The tub was cracked. If I did choose to fill it up, it would have flooded the room below. The sink did not drain well. Looking at the pipe beneath, it had a slight angle up rather than down. TV remote didn't work properly. When I told staff, they totally acted liked they didn't care and offered a room change but I declines since I didn't want to pack up everything again. I asked for 1 day comp since I was there for three, they only offered to remove the $50 a day resort fee. Pool want even open. EXTREMLY uncaring front desk staff. Oh never got a working TV remote also. Would maybe recommend if the room was $50- to 70 a night but not $400. I posted picks on social media as proof. Even a pick I found of a used condemn in...
