I give four stars for the food and one star for the service, hence the 2-star result. It was a beautiful spring Sunday and while driving past the Main Line I decided to stop in, I had my mind set on a turkey club. After a bit of a wait I was seated at the booth closest to the cash register. I ordered the grilled chicken avocado club and settled in, getting ready to enjoy my lunch. And then it began... For the next 30 minutes the staff did nothing but complain to each other while seated or standing around in the entry area. They talked about one of the cooks who could not get food out fast enough and how some of the servers had to discount meals due to the slow service. They complained about how busy Easter was (aren't you glad for the business?). They crabbed about some of their coworkers not putting in enough effort or wanting to rotate stations rather than stay where they were assigned. Someone complained about customers who came in later one evening and when they were told that the diner was closed the customer said that they mistakenly thought that the place was open an hour longer than stated. In fact, the pre-Covid hours are still on the door and so I'm assuming that's what the customer believed to be the hours. While I was there a large party was apparently seated in the rear section with a numbers of kids. The server responsible for that area complained about the fact that the kids were messing up the other tables and now she'd have to reset about ten tables. Granted, the adults in the party should have taken control of the situation and I'd probably gripe about it as well but none of this should have been happening within earshot of other paying customers. There was incessant chatter the entire time. This is a dining area where paying customers are seated, it's not their breakroom. When my server finally came around to ask how everything was I told her that the food was excellent but that I couldn't enjoy it while having to listen to the constant complaining by staff. She halfheartedly apologized and then walked away. The woman stationed at the register, Kathleen, acknowledged the problem and was very apologetic and offered to take 10% off of my bill. She also offered a complimentary dessert from another business but since I'm diabetic I couldn't accept. All in all, it's not really a place that will...
Read moreRose L. was right from her comments a year ago. My parents wanted to come here like they used to pre-COVID, but shifted to take out because it was more convenient for them. This was their diner and they loved the owner and the staff. When they walked through the door this time around, they received a nice welcome, but a little over the top. Their reaction was almost like PTSD, shrinking and stepping backwards. They wanted to sit in a booth and the place was not very busy. The hostess whose voice was rattling in their ears was not listening and sat them in the corner near the bathroom. No one was on the other side, but my parents didn’t want to make a fuss. The radio was blaring and the hostess and waitress were still not paying attention, asking 20 questions, and then took their order. My folks were ready to leave. They couldn’t hear themselves think. Short stack of pancakes and a burger with fries. Simple, right? Wrong. Something was off about this place. If my parents don’t like something, like I said, they won’t make a fuss. Two bites of some thing that look like pancakes, and my father was ready to call it quits, pay and go. He whispered to me in the vestibule “we can’t come here anymore.” I felt awful for them both. This was a special place for them and they don’t go out much. I didn’t think much of it when we first came and I held the door for them, but the hostess was very rude, according to my father, when she asked him if I was with them. I didn’t think anything of it, but he made a big deal out of it, and that kind of set the tone for the rest of the time we were there. It was sad. I’ve been here a few times and enjoyed it when I used to come here. This is one of the last few diners in the area. I know the one in Walden closed some time ago, but mainline had a different, better atmosphere. It was a diner. I’d like to know what happened because my parents were visibly upset there and I had never seen...
Read moreMy husband and I stopped at this diner (follow the highway signs!) while returning to N.C. from N.H. a little over 2 weeks ago. (Sorry for the lateness, here.)
Once you get off the highway, just keep the Speedway Gas Station/Convenience store to your right...go right on by it...and the Mainline Diner will be on the left-hand side, approximately 1/2 to 1 mile down the road from the highway exit...which is why you don't see it right away.
But don't let that stop you! This diner is GREAT! I swear it has more items on it's menu than Hometown Buffet, Golden Corral, or Denny's. Lol. If you can't find anything you'd like to eat, it certainly won't be the diner's fault. :)
Plus, the food we ordered was cooked to perfection, with the portions quite large! And this seemed to be the case with all the other food we saw coming out to nearby tables.
What made our experience even more enjoyable was our waitress, Honore, who treated us as though we were longtime friends instead of customers. She answered our food questions informatively, made recommendations, and also entertained us with several humorous incidents about the goats and pigs she owned. :)
We also saw Josephine, the Manager, frequently interacting with staff and customers alike, and she seemed very pleasant while also making sure things ran smoothly. (As a retired nurse, I often look at how others balance 'niceness' with 'professionalism'.)
As we were leaving, though, my husband and I did agree that there was one very major fault with this diner : IT'S NOT NEAR US IN NORTH...
