As one of a very few food outlets at the hospital, this Panera Bread enjoys a captive market. Probably for this reason the manager and team have reached a level of complacency last witnessed at the peak of Soviet Russia and one that would normally kill any similar business in a more competitive setting.
This reached its zenith after a week’s stay at the hospital, when I witnessed a team of at least 10 PB employees on a Saturday take 25mins to serve an iced cafe latte to a lady holding a young baby.
Never witnessing such incompetence, after 10 mins her order had displayed as “it’s ready” but as her name disappeared, she fairly enquired to disinterested staff as to the whereabouts of her drink, and the manager confidently said the display was actually wrong and her order was still on the line - a helpful feature to any order tracking system.
After 15mins, now concerned fellow customers pointed out to the stout manager that others had now arrived, ordered and received the very same drink. He dithered around for 5 mins feigning action and trying to get his team to make the missing drink.
After 20mins and still no beverage, the manager finally took a break from adding no value and chatting up the pretty girl working “front of house” to begrudgingly go into the kitchen and “personally” oversee its preparation.
Something considerably more latte than cafe finally emerged after 25mins. Some mumbled apology and no offer of a refund, was the final touch of class from the manager of this fine...

Read moreI do like eating at Panera. However….This is my first bad experience. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. Both were awful. After taking one bite of the sandwich and one sip of the coffee I threw them out. I decided to go back for lunch and asked the gentlemen (Cristian) who was at the register when I purchased breakfast if I could see the manager. He was very nice and called her over. I told (manager) Sandra about my awful morning experience. She was very understanding, kind and concerned about what happened. She apologized and gave me a lunch of my choice on Panera. I was very happy about the way I was treated and my lunch was delicious.Thank you Sandra for being professional and making it right for one of your valued customers. That is the reason for my 5...
