Cafe 56 — Restaurant in Town of Norfolk

The whole experience was less than idle. Food was terrible, service was terrible, workers were rude. My husband and I walk in and we’re immediately seated and place our order after about 5 minutes. We order regular pancakes and a grilled cheese - as simple as simple can be. Then, we watch a table of about 10 people get seated behind us and we listen to them place their order, no big deal. Then we wait. And wait. And wait some more. Now it’s an hour later and we still don’t have our food. My husband goes up to the counter to ask when we can expect our food since we’re still waiting and the woman working, very rudely, tells him that we were seated after that large party and we would get our food after theirs. My husband said we were here before them and the woman snapped at him and said no we weren’t, so he just let it go and sat back down. During this time, we watched several other tables get seated AND served while we were still waiting for our pancakes and chilled cheese. It’s now almost two hours since we sat down and we finally just got our food. The grilled cheese was average grilled cheese, nothing fancy, just a classic. The pancakes, however, were TERRIBLE. They were so dense, the exact opposite texture you would want in a pancake, and they tasted like straight up flour. I don’t think this place even knows what vanilla is. You had to dump so much syrup on the pancakes just to give it some kind of moisture and to cover up the flavorless flour taste.

You’re better off driving the extra 10 minutes to the Hometown Norwood Cafe that’s up the street. The service and food here are...

Have had both breakfast and lunch here 4 or 5 times...Breakfast meals were always good with cheese omelets served with salsa on the side, sausage, toast and home fries. Always cooked to my liking. Lunch however has been hit or miss. I always order a cheeseburger with either fries or macaroni salad or regular salad. The cheeseburger is always ordered as medium well-done and is never cooked that way...always comes out over cooked or under cooked... The bun it is served on is so thick, you can hardly get it into your mouth. Please consider going with another bun that is a thinner bun. The salads are often perfect, sometimes with not all the same ingredients included though. Consistency in the house salad would be nice. With the waitresses serving, I would like them to be mindful, that they should check back once or twice during the meal to see if everything is acceptable or if anything else is needed, like a refill. Every time I have eaten here, they walk by the table, and even though I reach out to get their attention, they never return to address my concerns. What is up with that. Retraining by the owner is required. You WILL lose paying customers by customers...

It was our PLEASURE to finally find a good , family oriented and run diner near home on the weekly way down to Potsdam on the Route 56 that we always travel. The quality of the food , the attentiveness of the server and the menu pricing are all fabulous ! This was an extra GIFT on Sunday , September 4th , my 70th birthday based on a great recommendation of our neighbors on Wilson Hill Island . As I have often made reviews as to the absence of these redeeming qualities in many posts , " Cafe 56 " is a welcome departure from the many substandard experiences Millie and I have endured in the past 5 years . The only question is why did it take so long for us to give them a try . We will now become some of their loyal regulars and the best to their entire staff and their families , also best of wishes to Ms. Mary Jane on her future...
