“The kitchen staff didn’t realize that butter was dairy.”
Not recommended, especially if you have food allergies
I live in LA and I’m back home in NY for the first time in 10 years and my family wanted me to have a great dining experience, but unfortunately, it was one of my worst… first of all, we waited 20 min and had to ask twice just for water. Then, we ordered drinks and appetizers and I made it very clear I had a dairy allergy. We ordered a pineapple mojito, which was on the specials board, but they brought a grapefruit Cosmo instead. 20 minutes later our appetizers came out, both covered in cheese, so I could not eat them. We put in our entree orders and, of course, mine came out covered in dairy and not as described on the menu… so I could not eat that either. They said they were “cooking up French fries” for me (which I didn’t want), but when I asked for my asparagus with no butter, they told me the kitchen was closed. We reordered the mojito “special” and it came out without mint. My old fashions had no cherries. The steaks were overcooked.
They did end up comping some of our food and drinks (our bill was still $200), but I think the worst part was when the owner came out and asked how everything was, then tried telling us that “the kitchen staff didn’t realize that butter was dairy.”
Simply put - no one I know will ever be...
Read moreMy husband, daughter and I enjoyed a birthday meal at the Mariner on Labour Day weekend and we are already planning a return soon! First, do not let the plain street facade trick you: the stylish-but-easygoing vibe inside and the stunning lake views more than makes up for it. Food was delicious and clearly made with care. In restaurants, it's often the simple things that are the most difficult to get consistently right but the chefs here definitely knew what they were doing! The fries were thin, crispy and perfectly salted (just like you would find them at a French brasserie) and the broth accompanying the steamed mussels was just INSANELY good. Service was attentive and we really felt welcomed by the friendly owners-managers Brandon and Theresa. So do make the drive (from Plattsburgh or elsewhere) and check it out for yourselves if you haven't already. This restaurant is a gem! N.B. If I had to suggest one thing, I guess it would be to consider adding a few more intimate tables to the large 6-person family-style setups. This would be a great spot to visit with a small group or for a...
Read moreVery few places in the area, truly seem to care for “feed back”. This establishment, not only actively seeks it, they gratuitously accept it. Don’t be surprised if the chef comes out to check on your meal.
The fries are legit, btw. Everyone in our party, was impressed and commented on them. That said, the poutine… if you can imagine, was spot on. Cheese curds were melted, gravy way plentiful, yet not overkill, and we already know about the fries. Do ask about the gravy. They will tell you the secret.
Honestly, with the party I was in attendance with, gotta say, it’s been far and few places with no complaints. Not only do I highly recommend this dining establishment, I highly recommend you actively communicate your inquiries, concerns and desires. Unlike many places, this chef/staff are happy to attempt to accommodate your pallet/dietary requests. Someone thought the lights were too bright…staff didn’t hesitate to appropriately dim them. They were most humble and accommodating...
