This is a real find (If you're not put off by the kitschy signs and postings all over the place, charming in their own way. Who can't relate to, for example, "A penny for your thoughts seems a little pricey?") Anyway, this is a true old-school gem of a place. The waitstaff seem to all be older women who you know are just getting by, and are sweet and attentive and unobtrusive and good at their job. It tends to bring older white people and families as customers - though that's likely a reflection of Plattsburgh's demographics. And the food? Spectacular, classic, fresh and excellent value for the price! I'll confess I've only had two items every time I go there, though their menu is extensive. Because why stray from perfection, which is their seafood chowder and crab cakes? The chowder (there's also traditional clam and others too) is absolutely stuffed with tender fish, shrimp, scallops, and lobster in a delicious and not heavy milk/cream based broth. It's always superb. And the deep-fried crab cakes are so tender with a beautiful dark brown domed crust surrounding them, I always end up ordering another! Comes with several side sauce options (and very good fries if you want the platter), but they are so good by themselves I only occasionally use any for variety. As most all the other reviews agree, you will not be disappointed here. Welcoming, hearty food in a friendly low-key atmosphere at a good price - what's...
Read moreWe were a family of 4 driving from New York City to Montreal and after some quick google search, I knew I had to stop by at this family run restaurant near the Canadian border for fresh seafood.
There was a deal for 2 lobsters for $32 which without thinking twice, we opted for it. Despite our inexperience in deshelling lobsters, the staff here were more than happy to guide us as to the deshelling process.
The lobsters were extremely fresh and served steamed with butter. The fish & chips included fresh cut potatoes with fresh crispy battered fish and fresh tartare sauce.
As for the dessert, the crowning glory was the peanut cake that our server recommended to us. Yes, it may not necessarily be a dessert place but the peanut cake was extremely amazing that even though I am not a person with sweet tooth, I loved it.
It’s a pity that I am not a frequent traveller across this border area, otherwise I know I would be a regular at Mainely Lobster & Seafood. Nevertheless, I do look forward to my next trip here and as for anyone travelling between New York and Quebec, this place should be included as...
Read moreWanted to take my honey out for her favorite, crab legs. They were on the menu online as well as in person. Got there at 6pm Saturday night and sat at a booth with a pleather tabletop that was perpetually tacky... We're told right away that they were out of baked potato (which wpuld be my choice of a side with rhe lobster I planned to order) so that was a disappointment. Our order was taken and after a few minutes the waitress returns to tell us they no longer carried crab legs... Really the only reason I chose this establishment. My honey chose another entry. I ordered lobster dinner with scallops. Scallops were delicious. I have never seen a lobster tail as small as the one I was served with. Bottom line, service was food, meals was very, very disappointing.
