This review is about both the dining and catering experiences, as I have been a customer for both.
First, the dining experience is top-notch. Dining options are few and far between where Hi Point is located, but it is such amazing quality food and service that it often attracts folks from Madison and other areas. The brandy Old Fashioned’s are great, and you’ll be sure to receive a generous pour of brandy. Every menu item I’ve ever had, including one of their chef specials (hot honey fried chicken) was incredible. Steaks are high quality and made precisely to your liking every time. The service is also excellent every time, even with some of the younger waitstaff, which reflects well on their staff training.
We decided to go with Hi Point as our caterer for both our wedding rehearsal dinner (on site in the ballroom) and our reception dinner (off site at the Blue Mound State Park Friends Shelter). Both events went exceedingly well and the staff were attentive and courteous. The events coordinator, Beth, was extremely responsive, on a couple occasions even replying to my email within minutes. She is a great communicator and was always thorough, answering all our questions with the amount of detail we were seeking. The process of doing a tasting went well; we ended up doing two tastings to ensure we could try items from all three menus. We were pleased to find out you do not need to choose just one menu and you can mix and match/customize items from all three menus. Richard, the head cook and owner, is an awesome guy who is clearly passionate about what he does. He attended our tastings and final meeting before the event, which helped me and my husband feel that we were in good hands and that our expectations were being heard by the ultimate person in charge. We had about 10 guests who needed veg/vegan options and despite being a steakhouse, Richard and his team were able to make really tasty substitutions for those folks. Finally, I want to extend a big thank-you to the bartender that they chose for our reception, Cole. Cole worked with our pop-up bar setup and a menu of three signature cocktails that I had made up. He only had a chance to review some notes but everything was otherwise novel to him on-site. Despite that, he was wonderful. When an issue arose with one ingredient I had forgotten, Cole was resourceful and found a sensible alternative. He made one of my favorite craft cocktails perfectly; it was such a delight. The waitstaff were also very attentive. As the Bride who barely found time to eat or drink, I noticed my water glass was constantly being refilled by waitstaff - I knew I was being taken care of! Thanks, Hi Point, for outstanding service. We appreciate you and you have found lifelong...
Read moreLet just say one of the worst experiences ever at a restaurant (5 PM 3/24/22). We heard good things, so we wanted to check it out. My wife and I were with my daughter coming back from a very good college visit, so we stopped here to cap off the day. I wish we wouldn't have. The only reason l gave 1 star is due to the waitress being attentive. We ordered 3 steaks and all were cooked incorrectly. My daughter ordered the filet and likes it medium. She ordered it medium well though due to past experience, because this steak is usually 2.5" tall and many times it gets a little under cooked. Often inexperienced chefs will ask to butterfly a filet when someone asks for medium well, but this didn't happen, so we thought we were in good hands. We weren't. The filet came out medium-rare to rare. My wife and I ordered sirloins. My steak was paper thin and should never have been in a restaurant. I ordered it medium well not knowing how thin it would be and it came out well done of course. My wife ordered hers medium and it came out medium-well to well. We typically don't like to send things back, so I ate about 5 bites and my daughter managed to eat about half of hers (4 oz). The waitress asked my wife if she wanted a new steak and after a few moments she reluctantly agreed. Before I could say I'll trade mine for that one, she grabbed my wife's plate and was off to the kitchen. She came back a few minutes later with a beautiful 1.25" cut of sirloin, but you guessed it, rare. The waitress asked if it was cooked ok, but my wife didn't have the heart to send it back again. We got 3 to go containers and paid the bill ($120 with tip). Once home, the under cooked steaks were cooked a little more and our dog was the happiest, as he got mine. Hopefully this helps to get more experience in...
Read moreWhat everybody else is saying. Good food, good service, fun location (don't miss the story about the original burning to the ground, and the plane crashing into the new building)!
Crowd is diverse, with farmers and workers in blue jeans, and families dressed up for a nice night out. Everybody was friendly and well behaved, including the kids. Reservations are highly recommended, and should be made well before you plan to arrive. Hi Point is that popular.
Menu surprised me because the entrees are pretty fancy for a place out in the country. The special was roasted duck breast with a raspberry sauce. I'm not a big fan of duck, but the description sounded yummy.
I had giant scallops over Rice Pilaf with Asparagus. The scallops were perfectly seared, and I checked with Google to learn how to determine if they were real Scallops (they were). I liked Hi-Points use of short grain rice for the Pilaf. The slight stickiness held the sauce and asparagus together for a delightful taste combination. Had fresh hot rolls as an appetizer--I can't swear that they baked them there, but they certainly weren't bought from Kwik Trip! Nice crusty crust, lightly seasoned and had well developed and tender rising structure inside. Warm enough to melt the butter I spread.
Had a traditional Wisconsin Brandy Old-Fashioned Sweet with dinner. Have to say it was a little strong on the Brandy at first, but it mellowed out very nicely throughout the meal as the ice melted. Sip slow at first and you will be rewarded as your ice dilutes the hearty formulation a bit.
